By: Carol McCloud

Date read: 1/11/2019

Genre: Picture book

Review: Students are able to see how rewarding it is to show kindness towards others. This book explains how helping others can boost your mood and self confidence as well as those around you. This is how you "fill your bucket". It also shows how one would feel if their bucket was empty. If one's bucket is empty, this means that others are not being kind and respectful. I like that this story uses simple and direct sentences to explain a difficult concept to young learners.

Age/Audience: This book would be interesting for children who need social/emotional support in the elementary school setting. It is best fit for students in pre-k through second grade.

Possible teaching points:
- Affective skills: students with Autism have a difficult time expressing frustration without lashing out. This shows students that when they lash out, they hurt themselves and those around them.
Cover:

By: Beverly Cleary

Date read: 1/11/2019

Genre: Early chapter books

Award: John Newberry Medal

Review: Leigh Botts had a complicated life with many hardships at home. He begin to write letters to Mr. Henshaw, an author he really liked, in the second grade. Mr. Henshaw said to become a great writer Leigh should read, look, listen, think, and write. He longed to become an author, but had a hard time starting out. Mr. Henshaw suggested he start a diary and write in it as often as possible. Leigh wrote all about his life in his diary starting with his parents divorce, and ending with a lunch date he attended with an author because he had won the young writers yearbook competition. Other events he spoke about was; someone stealing items out of his lunchbox, how he made an alarm for his lunchbox, and his new friend Berry that he made in school. At the end of the story Leigh had used writing to overcome his feelings about his absent father, he no longer felt as angry when his dad did not follow through on his promises. This story is a great read that incorporates culture differences and obstacles endured for an elementary school student.

Age/Audience: This book would be interesting to children who aspire to be something when they grow up. It is best fit for 2nd to 3rd grade students.

Possible teaching points:

- Inference: There are many simple, yet strong details throughout the story, that can lead a student to ask the question: what comes next?

-Used as a motivator to write your favorite author a letter and ask him/her questions to help you become a better writer.
Cover:

It talks about how King was friends with a boy who had white skin and once school started, they could no longer hang out. They went to separate schools, playgrounds, and restaurants. It spoke about how African Americans were treated on a public bus. Rosa Parks was also mentioned for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a bus. It spoke of the many boycotts, protests, and arrests of Martin Luther King. This included the march on Washington and the I have a dream speech he gave. He started as a boy, his dad wanted him to take over the family business of making candles and soap but instead he went to work for his brother at a printing shop. He built his own printing business even writing the Poor Richard’s Almanac. He had lots of questions and wanted to find ways to answer them; what makes the wind blow? Where does electricity come from? Why is the ocean warm near the shore? And so many more. He made a kite to prove that electricity was real through a lighting strike. He invented a wood burning stove that others could use to warm their house. He created the first public library and volunteer fire department.
