Members of the Choctaw tribe are growing tired after many moons of forced nomadic lifestyle. A people known for their elaborate villages, the Choctaw have recently been on the run from the Chickasaw, who have betrayed our sacred soil and joined forces with the white men. One chief said, “We long for the comforts of our homes: grass houses and cane mats. We have never lived in make-shift shelters in the wilderness until now.” English promises of guns and ammunition have swayed the Chickasaw loyalty and made them thirst for the blood of our people. Sources say that the Chickasaw leaders met with the captains of an English ship on the eve of the harvest moon and struck a deal: Native American slaves in exchange for guns and ammo.

It is no mystery what led the Chickasaw to accept this offer, as their villages are bordered by enemies on all sides here in Georgia. Other adversaries to the Chickasaw include the Creek, Kickapoo, Shawnee, and Quapaw tribes. While the Chickasaw are known as “the most formidable warriors of the Southeast” (Ethridge), their primitive weapons and battle strategies were no match for the number of opponents they faced. Their only hope of survival was to take on English allies. After making the bloody pact with the English, the Chickasaw received weapons of all kinds and used their newfound power to raid the nearby Choctaw village, killing many of the tribe’s men, and capturing even more of their women and children. One witness described the ordeal, saying, “It was the worst night of my life; I lost my wife and three children.” While the remaining tribe members hunger for vengeance, retaliation may be near impossible against the advanced weaponry of the Chickasaw warriors. For now, they continue to make do with what they have in their forest camps, and look forward to the day when they can avenge their fallen people.
