What i have learn in our practicum with a child that needed extra support was when the child had a tantrum and the manger would tell the educator to go to another room for the child be in quiet calming area and be alone with the educator. Because where they attend is to overwhelming for them sometimes and they need time alone to calm down when they have tantrums in daycare.

What I have learned in this practicum is tunnganarniq, theres wasnt a child with special needs in the last practicum we were in but tunnganarniq wasnt used a lot, especially being greeted in the morning or when we go into the daycare to start off our day. It has taught me to be kinder to the children as for them to be welcomed as us educators we also wanted to be welcomed into the daycare but it wasnt given. When we first get to the daycare i tried to greet the children by saying Hi/ullaakkut as that’s what i would want to be told too even if its by kids or the other educators.

There weren’t any children who needed extra support but what I have learned is that children who need extra support are more difficult to work with as you need to be patient and really think of how you can include them in the daily schedule. Knowing more of Inuit Qaujimatuqangit Principles has helped me grow as an ECE because the 8 principles are very important in Inuit Culture and are used daily in everyone’s life without actually knowing that.
