Why We Chose This: Jane loves nature. Ever since she was a child at Gateshead, she would walk and run in the yard and go on adventures. Before she left Gateshead, she went deep into the estate yard to the point that Bessie had to look for her. Why We Chose This: Jane has a fondness of art. When she moved to Lowood, she tried to be on her best behavior so that she could begin to take it as a "class" along with French. She took it with her and made the best of what she could. Then, at Thornfield, she would mind her own and draw portraits and landscapes. At one point, when she is introduced to Mr. Rochester, he is looking over her art. It is here, that he gives her somewhat of a compliment, saying that it is good for someone like her. Why We Chose This: Jane has spent the majority of her life as an outcast, and not wanted by anyone. After her parents and uncle passed, her aunt acted like she wasn't even there. All she wanted was to be loved by someone, and even says, "There is no happiness like that of being loved by your fellow creatures, and feeling your presence is an addition to their comfort." This shows us that even just one person loving her and making her feel wanted would make her feel comforted.

Why We Chose This: Jane has spent her life without anyone to love her. She was only showed love when she became friends with Helen Burns, but that was short-lived. Finally, once she began to live at Mr. Rochester's estate did she finally get a sense of family and love. In the quote above, Jane and Mr. Rochester confess their love. At this time, she was beginning to really fall for him, and she loved Adele, wanting her to get an education. Why We Chose This: In her early childhood, Jane would pass her time by reading. She wasn't loved by anyone in her home and she couldn't please anyone even when she tried. It was best when she stayed out of everyone's way. The best way for her to do this was to read. When she read, she felt as though she could go to other worlds and forget where she was. She could have a different life in different books. She also loved to learn different things in each book she read.
