Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who are - the Holy One of God!' 'Be quiet!' said Jesus sternly. 'Come out of him!' The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek."

Mark 2:1-7
"A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They fathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralysed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralysed man, 'Son, your sins are forgiven.' Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 'Why does this fellow talk like that? He's blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?"

This section of Mark chapter 1 describes how amazed people were at Jesus's teaching because it was so powerful and did not follow the laws of teaching at the time. He is also seen casting out an impure spirit within a man inside the synagogue. He willingly saved a possessed man, which further justifies Jesus being a merciful, powerful saviour.

This whole situation of a paralysed man being healed never would have happened if it weren't for the enormous crowd formed outside of Jesus's house. The large crowd signifies how much God's word touched people. There was no space left for anymore people because so many people believed him to be the saviour. The paralysed man was lowered into the house in front of Jesus, and instead of Jesus getting mad that he interrupted, he said 'Son, your sins are forgiven'. He unhesitatingly forgave and healed. The Gospel of Mark shows Jesus to be a merciful healer that touched many people's lives.

This section of the Gospel of Mark, we see that the whole town gathered at Jesus's door. It says that Jesus casted out many demons and healed people suffering various diseases. When Jesus was casting out demons, the demons did not speak because they knew who he was. Demons are known to be the spawn of Satan and pure evil. They do not love or care about anything, they are evil creatures who do anything they please. Demons are what peoples are scared of. But for demons to not speak against Jesus, shows how powerful Jesus is. It shows that he is a fearless saviour, so even demons cannot speak up against him.

Yancey: The Jesus I Never Knew (part 2)

Towards the end of chapter 2, Yancey writes:
"Because of Easter, I can hope that the tears we shed, the blows we receive, the emotional pain, the heartache over lost friends and loved ones, all these will become memories, like Jesus' scars. Scars never completely go away, but neither do they hurt any longer. We will have re-created bodies, a re-created heaven and earth. We will have a new start, an Easter start."
First of all, Yancey states that scars are permanent but do not hurt forever. He then says that he wishes all the problems we have on earth will become scars, permanent but no longer painful. In my opinion, I think that Yancey is trying to say that all the issues we encounter and go through on earth will only hurt us temporarily. We should not hold onto these earthly conflicts and we should let them be short lived. Yes, they will stay in our memories for as long as we live, but they should and will eventually stop hurting us, like a scar. But why should we treat hurtful events on earth like this? This is because, like Yancey states, we will die and go to heaven to live an eternal life, have a re-created body, a new start. If we obsess over these problems, we will be blinded by grief, anger, all these negative emotions, that will make any hope in an after-life seem impossible and insubstantial.

My own thinking of Jesus (part 2)

(Mark 2:4-5) "Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
In my opinion, if anyone who was known as "Son of God", I would assume their sermon or teaching was very valuable. If someone interrupted by tearing open my roof and landing in the centre in an already crowded room, I would be very mad because not only is it unfair for the other people who have been waiting outside for longer, but it is also rude to interrupt a very important sermon. However, Jesus reacts the completely opposite way and responds to this incident with complete kindness and forgiveness. He simply states that this man's sins are forgiven and saves him from paralysis. Reading this section of the Gospel of Mark during class helped me get a step closer to forming my own personal idea of who Jesus is. I now believe that Jesus is slow to anger and he is only here to help us. A lot of the times in the Bible, we see Jesus harshly punishing people, but I know he only wants the best for us and will forgive us even if we sin. He loves us so much and that is very evident throughout the Bible, but reading this one quote helped emphasise that message. He is a fair powerful father, a saviour of millions.

I have been born and raised in a very strong Christian family, going to church and Sunday school every week. Like Yancey stated in his first chapter, I also associated Christianity with pretzels and paper biblical character cut outs at a very young age. All the stories, parables, lessons, etc. we have learned and are currently learning in class, has already been ingrained into my brain over the years. This means I also had a general understanding of the Gospel of Mark. I knew several of the parables inside it such as 'Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy'.

However, this project forced me to take a closer look at the Gospel of Mark and analyse the message it was conveying. This project is based around the prompt, 'Who is Jesus?'. All my life, I just knew Jesus as God, the only higher being, the godhead three-in-one, the Prince of Peace. But I only knew these things about him because that's what I was taught in Sunday school or my parents. I never independently looked through the word of God to figure out who Jesus was for myself. The one day we were let out into Turtle Cove to read the Gospel of Mark, one particular quote stood out to me and made me rethink my whole perception of Jesus.

Why I chose my background photo

You cannot clearly see the background photo I chose, so I attached it to the bottom of this post. I chose a photo of Jesus with a halo type glow around his head, standing in the middle of people praying and bowing to him. However, on the dark corners of the room, there are angry people holding knives and chains pointing at him. I chose this photo because I thought it accurately captured who Jesus was, while also showing the His impact on people. Jesus has his arms spread out, almost as if he is blessing people while everyone near Him is looking at Him for forgiveness. In the edges of the photo, we see people and a king in the dark looking at Jesus scornfully. This shows that his teaching was not bound to the laws and seemed so outrageous at the times, many people had a strong aversion towards him. Overall, this photo shows Jesus was a powerful being who forgave and saved people while teaching valuable lessons that were not bound to the law at the time.
