District 9 Meeting by Kristin Beller

As we think about the end of this school year and the beginning of the next quickly approaching, we need to develop clear, shared understandings about the needs public school workers will require to protect themselves, their students and their families. We cannot count on any local or state government entity to think of all the ways we need protection or all the ways our students may need academic or emotional support. WE are the body that must be creating space for us to have conversations with each other that center our needs.

Educators need time to plan. We need a better plan tha what we’ve done for the end of the 19-20 school year. It is a stressful time for everyone. Teachers are under more stress than ever. They are working even more hours than before and juggling caring for dependents. Consider no students on-site and no virtual contact on Fridays for planning time. Consider sharing work loads e.g For elementary- on a grade level one person plans/records A subject for whole grade level. Maybe planning or virtual lessons are shared within a district. For middle and high school maybe responsibilities are shared across the district. E.g if someone is the only person teaching a subject at their school they have teachers at other schools share planning responsibilities or co-teach virtually.

Consider hiring part-time teachers to help with work load. Particularly thinking for virtual learning planning, recording lessons, meeting students virtually. Use CARES act funds?

Some people have mentioned perhaps HS students are better adjusted and able to do remote learning and have proposed we use some space from HS or perhaps middle school if students are doing remote learning more for students who need more teacher class time. I'm not sure if this is the best option, but I think we need to brainstorm all ideas even if they are "outside of the box" - what about high school students taking virtual classes at other schools? Consider regrouping midyear? Kids belong to a grade level and get to know all teachers through virtual learning and perhaps get a class assignment once we can get back into the buildings full time.
