Due to the growing numbers of American settlers in Texas, their unwillingness to follow the law, and the desire of independence from the Mexican government caused the government to become watchful over the settlers. This slow but boiling tension led to the settlers fighting Mexico at the Alamo. With the 200 hundred defenders led by Travis Scott they were outnumbered by the Mexican army and died. This conflict eventually led forces under Sam Houston to attack Santa Anna's encampment while they were sleeping. After taken prisoner Santa Anna signed a peace treaty and agreed to recognize an independent Texas.
