I have learned that the A Cinderella Story franchise keeps the Cinderella tale fresh and unique by taking a modern day approach to the tale while also taking on a feminist, girl power approach to it. The franchise's 6 films all reshaped the female protagonist to be intellectual and strong women whose main pursuit is not to find a man, but to find an education and/or career. Though the protagonists find love in the end, their success is based on their hard work and dedication rather than their romantic pursuits. These females claim and assert selfhood and determination by discovering themselves and fighting by those dissenters of freedom, instead of waiting for a prince to save them. Not only does the franchise redefine the heroine of the role of the damsel in distress, but it touches on the gender roles for both men and women, e.g., boys can't do ballet because "it's for girls", or girls can't skateboard because "it's for boys". Some of the films talk about young women's self-perceptions and the beauty standards, as well as the toxic behaviour of the "mean girl" role and the influence of each of their mothers. Another issue covered is the masculinity image which the men have to portray; the films show how these images negatively impact young males and show non-traditional men who resist patriarchal forces in their lives, as does Cinderella.

Since A Cinderella Story : Starstruck is still relatively new, I need more information on this movie, e.g., reviews, blog posts, which will show the ways in which this film is different than other Cinderella tales and how the approach keeps the tale fresh and unique. I would also like to see if there are other ways in which the franchise's movies differentiate themselves from others, rather than taking a modernistic and feminist approach to it; perhaps by looking at more reviews of the movies by critics or blog posts. In terms of the final creative project, I will need to figure out how to translate my research findings into a short story, meaning I will need to come up with a premise for the story that I can clearly and easily demonstrate as a new adaptation on Cinderella that is fresh and unique while also using the reasons/techniques that the Warner Bros. franchise used.
