Genre: Jazz
It's 3 o'clock in the morning /We've danced the whole night through/And daylight soon will be dawning/Just one more waltz with you

The song played while Daisy was telling Nick goodnight. She left him to go back up to the party where it had been playing.
Nick describes this song as "a neat sad little waltz" and the lyrics give off a melancholic mood. It implies that the dance will be last and the last of anything is hard to let go of.

The Sheik of Araby By California Ramblers

Genre: Jazz
I'm the Sheik of Araby,/ Your love belongs to me./ At night when you're asleep,/ Into your tent I'll creep--

Nick and Jordan were driving through Central Park when he heard girls sing the lyric of The Sheik of Araby as they discuss the location of Gatsby's house and why he moved to West Egg.
This is significant because the song represents Gatsby and his abundant love for Daisy. Gatsby wants to "creep" into Daisy's "tent" that is her world and seduce her with his wealth and money. The song reflects how he tries to regain her and how she has a grasp on his heart. It influences the mood by giving off a needy vibe and readers get a sense of how great his pursue was after Daisy and what he did to woo her.

Genre: Jazz
One thing's sure and nothing's surer/ The rich get richer and the poor get--children.

Gatsby commands Klipspringer to play the piano despite him not having any practice recently. Klipspringer plays The Love Nest unwillingly while Gatsby sees for Daisy for the first time in a while and turns all his attention towards her.
This is significant because this is the song that plays when Gatsby see the love of his life, Daisy, after five years. This song represents how wealth plays a major theme in the book but it could also mean how Gatsby's life is richer now that Daisy is back in it when they have their reunion. The mood expressed during this scene in the book is

Importance of Music in The Great Gatsby

In Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby, the setting takes place in the 1920's which is also known as the "Jazz Age" since it was at this time that jazz music skyrocketed. Fitzgerald incorporates jazz music into his book as not only to increase what the character's attitude but to set the mood. An example of this is when music was played at Gatsby's parties; jazz music was frequently played parties in the 20's. Jazz music's lyrics was often associated with a care-free lifestyle and Fitzgerald used this to his advantage to emphasize the scene. Overall, jazz music is important in the novel because it accentuates the mood, characters' attitudes, and the scene of which the lyrics are mentioned.

The mention of romance in this song also ties to Gatsby's love Daisy. The mood can also be saddening when thinking about having the last of something that is so loved.
