After Germany lost WWII, the allies divided Germany into 4s, Americans, British, French, and Soviets. Along with this, the City of Berlin, within Germany was also divided among the 4 allied nations. Despite the division, the Russians began to take immense control over areas controlled by the other allies and kicked them out. This resulted in the Berlin Blockade, where Stalin blocked off all access to West Berlin. Stalin hoped to starve the people in West Berlin into submission. As a result of this immense control, Truman started the Berlin Airlift, in which the US sent supplies, materials and food to West Berlin through air. This was Truman's way of saying they do not need to submit or need the help of the Soviets.

In 1962, there were Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba, which brought a major confrontation to the United States and the Soviets. Nikita Khrushchev placed missiles there in regard to his promise to protect the nation. When Kennedy learned about the presence of these weapons, he decided to put a naval blockade on Cuba to prevent Soviet shipments. Khrushchev and Kennedy reached an agreement: that the missiles that were now in Cuba would be removed and that the US would never invade Cuba again in exchange. The Nuclear War was averted.

As a result, the US developed a plan to attack Cuba. The Bay of Pigs invasion was an unsuccessful effort by US, backed Cuban exiles to overthrow Fidel Castro's government. Despite US assistance, the invasion was poorly planned and conducted, resulting in a stronger Castro dictatorship and tighter connections to the Soviet Union. As a result, in 1962, the Soviets began stationing nuclear weapons in Cuba.
