I bet you look good on the dance floor, practice one!

Context: We started rehearsing I bet you look good on the dance floor by Arctic Monkeys. The reason we are rehearsing this song is because we want to perform it for the halloween event. This event will take place in the Lubetkin Theatre inside East Durham College, willerby grove, Peterlee SR8 2RN.

Time written: I bet you look good on the dance floor by Arctic Monkeys was written by Alex Turner mid - 2004 for their first studio album. "What ever people say I am, thats what I am not".

Why? We are rehearsing this song because we want to do it for the Halloween event in October, also we find the song exciting to play. Another reason is that we believe the audience will know the song as it is a famous song. We did not nesacerely have any inspiration to do the song other than we enjoyed playing the song and kept with it as it is a good song.

Instrumentation: Two guitars, one vocalist and a drummer. However, we plan to have bass and backing vocals in the covers we are performing for the halloween event.

Key signature: The song I bet you look good on the dance floor is in the key F# minor. This is a minor key with a key signature of three sharps (F sharp, C sharp and G sharp).

Tempo: In the song I bet you look good on the dance floor has a tempo of 103 beats per minute (bpm). Knowing the bpm helps me out for when I listen to a metrenome. The metrenome will help me stay in time through out the entire song.

Time signature: I bet you look good on the dance floor has a time signature of 4/4. To me this is helpful to know as I will be able to stay in time easier by knowing the time signature.

Themes: The theme we are going for is something Halloween styled, but not to spooky hence why we have chosen the song we have. The song we have chose is not scary but it has some sort of distortion that gives it that spooky effect.

In this rehearsal we ran I bet you look good on the dance floor by Arctic Monkeys, I think in this rehearsal it ran really smoothly. However, there was some time slip ups that are fixable. At one part which was the part where we all simultaneously stop and come back in, I came in way too early and plan to fix it by practicing the song a lot more than I already have outside and in college. One thing I plan to do as a dummer for this song is to listen to a metrenome while playing, this is to enable the ability to keep in time through out the entire song. Overall, the rehearsal went smooth and majority of the time we were all tight and in time.

Date of rehearsal:

Thursday 18th September 2025

Today, I conducted an interview on Zak Reeves about Project 1 and how he thinks it is going so far. I asked Zak a total of five main questions which consisted of:

. Can you describe your project and what stage you're at?

. What do you think is working best in your project so far?

. What challenges have you faced, and how are you dealing with them?

. Who is your intended audience, and how do you think they'll respond to your work?

. What's one thing you'd like feedback on today?

These questions were asked alongside some extra questions building on each question. The interview lasted a total of 6 minutes and 47 seconds.

Breed - Nirvana - cover

In this run through of our cover of Breed by Nirvana, we stayed in time through out the song because I spent a lot of time figuring out a drum beat to go with it. One thing I think needs improving is the sound, as some instruments are louder than others, causing them to drown out each other. In this run through I stopped the drums about two bars early as all instruments go out with each other usually, this was a mistake that can be fixed by practicing a lot more at home and in college. Overall, I believe the run through went really well besides the odd mistakes that are not usual.

I bet you look good on the dance floor - Arctic Monkeys - cover

In this rehearsal I would say it was one of our best run throughs however, there were some slip ups. One of the slip ups where on timing however, I quickly solved the issue because I realised I was out of time with the rest of them. I noticed I was going from being at a fast tempo to being at a slow tempo. So as soon as I realised I started to speed my self up to correct my self. Later on in the recording at the part we come in all together, I came in a little bit early although I stayed in time with everyone else. Also we forgot to turn the live light on so people kept walking in distracting us during the recording. This could have really effected our recording / rehearsal as with the distraction and the unexpected fact that people were walking in could have effected us by distracting us causing us to possibly mess our timing or even just stopping the song. In future to prevent people walking in we will remember to turn the live light on while recording. Overall, this is one of our better recorded run throughs of this song.

In this run through of Midas we started strong by staying in time. However, it sounds like we went out of time at some parts of the song and I can't pin point where at just yet. However I plan to get another recording of this song to compare to this run through, this is so I can use the songs to help pin point any areas of development to fix up before the upcoming event on the 21st of October 2025. On the other hand, this recording was the best we have done when starting the song as we were all in time for the start. This shows that we have improved on this song itself.

I changed my poster around because the original was unreadable and covered more of the focal area. I moved a bit of the text around to free more space for the focal area to pop out more. I changed the font and colour of some of the text to make it more readable for the viewers. I also removed 'THE' from the ,main event name to make it shorter and make it roll of the tongue better. I believe this design is way better, as to me it catches the eye, has clear text on what the event is, where it is at, who are performing, the price and the timings.

Time written: "Breed" by Nirvana was written in 1991 and released on the album "Nevermind."

Instrumentation: Guitar: Kurt Cobain played a distorted electric guitar, providing the song's main riffs and aggressive energy.

Bass: Krist Novoselic's bassline complements the guitar, adding depth and a driving rhythm to the track.

Drums: Dave Grohl's powerful drumming provides the song's fast tempo and intensity, with heavy beats and energetic fills.

Key signature: he key signature of Eb minor means the song uses a scale based on Eb, and it includes six flats (Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, and Cb). Eb minor gives the song a darker, more melancholic feel, which fits the overall tone of "Breed."

Tempo: Fast Pace: At approximately 176 BPM, "Breed" is considered a fast-paced song.

Energetic Feel, this quick tempo contributes to the song's high energy and intensity, driving the aggressive and raw sound that Nirvana is known for.

Consistent Rhythm, the consistent, fast tempo helps maintain the song's momentum from start to finish, making it a standout track in their discography.

Time signature: A 4/4 time signature, also known as common time, means there are four beats in each measure, and a quarter note equals one beat. This gives the song a straightforward and steady rhythmic foundation, which is pretty typical for rock music. It helps create that driving, head-banging feel.

Time written: "Midas" by Wunderhorse was released as a single on September 16, 2022, and it's featured on their debut album, "Cub," which came out on September 30, 2022.

Instrumentation: Electric Guitars: Play a central role, providing both rhythm and lead parts with a blend of clean and distorted tones.

Bass Guitar underpins the song with a solid, melodic bassline that complements the guitar riffs.

Drums, offer a driving, dynamic rhythm, with a mix of straightforward beats and more complex fills.

Vocals, delivered with a distinctive, slightly raspy quality that adds to the song's emotional intensity.

Possible Additional Elements, depending on the specific arrangement, there might be subtle keyboard or synth textures in the background to enhance the atmosphere.

Key signature: "Midas" being in E major means the song uses the E major scale, which includes the notes E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, and D#. This key gives the song a bright and uplifting feel, although the specific arrangement and performance can still give it a more nuanced emotional tone.

Tempo: A tempo of 144 BPM puts "Midas" in the range of a fast allegro or a moderate allegro tempo. This speed contributes to the song's energetic and driving feel, making it engaging and dynamic. The specific feel can vary slightly depending on the rhythmic variations and how the band plays with the beat, but overall, it maintains a brisk pace.

Time signature: The song "Midas" by Wunderhorse uses a 4/4 time signature, which is like the bread and butter of popular music. It means each bar has four beats, and you count it with the quarter note in mind. This gives the song a steady, familiar rhythm that feels supernatural.

In this production meeting we discussed our desired roles and what needs to be done for the event to run smoothly. The following is the stuff we discussed:

Roles like the following: Health and safety, to ensure everyone is safe in the Lubetkin. Promotion, this is to ensure the event is being promoted. Stage crew, this is to ensure levels are correct and to ensure that the performer is in the place they need to be with the correct things. And finally Front of House, this is to ensure the attendees are safe and to ensure they get to the right area/seating.

Date and time of the event, this was discussed to ensure people can do the event and to make sure promotion do not miss lead anyone with false information.

Which bands are playing, this is to ensure we know how many bands are going to be performing so when people are coming to watch they know which bands they get to see. However, this information links to what time we start and finish the event, as this information helps us get a rough idea on how long the event will take place for.

In this production meeting, we confirmed the roles we were allocated the week before. We also talked about each ensemble's set list time; this was so we could confirm the doors opening time and the end of the performance. After this we went into our practice rooms to figure out an estimate of how long our set is including set up time and audience interaction.

All the songs we have covered and recorded were recorded by us after we figured out the songs. This was an error made by us as we should have recorded the songs even when we didn't really know how to play the songs. The reason we should have recorded before we knew how to get the songs down is because we could have used the old recordings to show our improvement on the songs themselves. In future when ever we decide we want to learn a new song we will record so we can compare the older recordings to the newer ones.

Unfortunately, our performance didn't go as smoothly as we'd hoped. We ran into some serious trouble with the monitors, which really threw us off our game. During 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor,' keeping up with the rapid tempo became a real challenge – it felt like we were constantly on the verge of slipping. The monitor issues were particularly noticeable in 'Breed,' where I kept coming in and out of time, making it hard to lock in with the rest of the band. It was frustrating trying to stay in sync when we couldn't hear ourselves properly. Despite these technical difficulties, we still managed to pull off a respectable show, especially considering the circumstances. We're just hoping the audience didn't notice too much of the chaos that was happening on stage!

Evaluation of the project.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire project. From analyzing two performances at the start of the term, to being able to perform for the Halloween event.

In this project I have explored more into theory of music with Emma which I enjoyed a lot as I am able to bring what I have learned from Emma to the practice rooms / future performances.

I am over the moon, that I was able to bring what I have been practicing for two months to a stage to perform in front of roughly 80 - 100 people, which was more than I was really expecting. The reason I was so excited to perform for the Halloween event is because when I was in level 2 music and production, my ensemble at the time didn’t get accepted during auditions, so I took that as a learning curve to work harder to ensure I could perform for this years Halloween event. In the performance I wanted to achieve getting the audience up and dancing along with us, which we accomplished as we had a fair few people at the front having a great time. Those people who where at the front then came up to us after our set and stated "I really enjoyed your set, as I new the songs and could dance and sing along. Which improved my experience at the gig."

My ensemble started learning two of the songs we performed ( Midas by wunderhorse and Breed by Nirvana) at the start of the term where as our other cover ( I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor by Arctic Monkeys ) we started learning at the start of the six weeks off at BigFoot studios in Horden. We started learning that song because we felt it matched with the type of genre we want to do which is indie, it also fit very well with our vocalist which just set everything in motion. I am unsure how many times we have practiced each song but, I feel we have practiced each song to the point where we don’t want to listen to those songs anymore.

During practice we had our equipment set up so everyone can hear each other equally, alongside having the equipment set up as if we were on stage. Main vocals is the center of attention, Guitar on the left, bass on the right and finally drums at the back. We set up the practice room as close as we could to how we wanted it on stage with the little amount of room we had. I was also playing on a five rack drumset.

In practice and outside of practice our ensemble talked to each other with respect no matter the situation, we also gave each other constructive feedback to work on. For example, Keiren (lead guitar) would always let me know if the tempo needed to be faster or slower, he also would give me things to work on at home like the drum roll at the start of Breed. These steps affected our performance greatly as I was able to do the songs at the right tempo and do the breed drum roll.

One piece of feedback I got from another student was that the opening to I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor sounded rushed and thought we should attempt to slow it down, which we ended up doing it at a similar tempo to the original song but a tiny bit slower.

In this project we also got to go to a speaking at the Newcastle Civic Centre on the 14th, this speaking was about how music in the North East is getting noticed again. They also mentioned that on the Thursday the mercury music awards where getting held inside the Newcastle Civic Centre for the first time, which was a big win to Newcastle and the whole of the North East as the mercury prizes are normally held in London with big artists. There was also many other talks on during the day in different parts of the Civic Centre, one of them being my favorite was the BBC radio 1. They talked about how to submit your music to get it onto the radio, you email them about why you want your music on the radio and submit your work, if it does not get accepted keep sending it in eventually it will be chosen. We took the idea of keep submitting your work and eventually it will be chosen and changed it up a little bit, keep practicing and eventually you can perform it. We changed it to give us the motivation to keep practicing the songs as we started to get sick of hearing our set list.

We also had a talk inside one of the music rooms from Dan, he was talking about the different websites where you could be paid every time your music is used, one of them ( PPL ) is where you write the song and you could be paid every time it’s used at events. The other ( PRS ) is if you played the instruments in the songs, and every time you get the song played either by you or any other band, you will get paid as well as the people who write it.
