Odysseus and his men faced both Charybdis and Scylla while rowing their boat through a narrow river. He told his men to avoid Charybdis, which means this forced them to pass near Scylla.

Odysseus is an epic hero because he showed many acts of bravery, intelligence and leadership. He showed bravery by stabbing the Cyclops, "rammed it deep in his crater eye"(Homer). He did that to blind him and keep his men safe when they were trying to escape. Odysseus shows leadership by defending the Cyclops. He claimed "nobody will not get out alive, I swear"(Homer). He thought that no one was going to make it out alive and they were all going to end up dying. Odysseus showed intelligence when he tied his men up and "carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits"(Homer). He did this so they wouldn't hear The Sirens when they pass through. Having these good characteristics is key in being a hero and Odysseus showed them very well. By having great characteristics, he "regained his family and his kingdom"(Homer).
