Odysseus and his men faced both Charybdis and Scylla while rowing their boat through a narrow river. He told his men to avoid Charybdis, which means this forced them to pass near Scylla. Passing her resulted in the deaths of 6 of his men. Odysseus shows leadership by defending the Cyclops. He claimed "nobody will not get out alive, I swear"(Homer).  He thought that no one was going to make it out alive and they were all going to end up dying. Odysseus showed intelligence when he tied his men up and "carved  a massive cake of beeswax into bits"(Homer). He did this so they wouldn't hear The Sirens when they pass through.  Having these good characteristics is key in being a hero and Odysseus showed them very well.
