Early Folklore: In traditional Irish tales, the banshee was essentially a mournful spirit, one attached to particular families and symbolizing grief and loss.

Modern Novels: In modern novels, such as "The Darkest Part of the Forest" by Holly Black, or "Banshee" by A. G. Howard, it becomes an even more elaborate creature, from the main character in a series of books to an empowering character. Many of these stories go well beyond any mere death omen into identity and legacy.

Supernatural: The banshee in Supernatural is more of a revengeful spirit. In that respect, her scream was a weapon. This also fits within the show's grand scale of an exploration of the different mythologies in today's world.

Teen Wolf: The banshee character in the famous Teen Wolf program, such as Lydia Martin, shows a more heroic figure together with special powers and merges traditional elements with modern-day narratives of friendship and courage.

There are numerous accounts from eyewitnesses that describe, variously, a sharp mournful sound at times likened to the cry of a woman in distress. Such accounts assume, as a rule, this wail warns of a family death, repeating the banshee's function as an omen.

Many Irish families claimed to have heard the wail of the banshee. In fact, they all generally describe the sound as that of a "keening" sort of sound, filled with sorrow. These reports often coincide with the time of a death in the family; hence, a deep sense of belief in her presence often settles in.
