I. Chlamydia was first discovered in 1907 by Halberstaedter and von Prowazek in an experimentally infected orangutan. But the disease has been recorded and dated all the way back to 1553 BCE.
II. The suspected infectious agent was a bacterium named Chlamydia trachomatis.
III.

I. Chlamydia is found all over the world. The World Health Organization found that the Americas and the Western Pacific Region have the highest cases rate. The first case was studied in the city of Jakarta, Indonesia.
II. Chlamydia was not recognized as an STI until 1976. It is an obligate intracellular parasite meaning it can only develop in a host. The first case was reported in 1951 and there were 10,764 reported in men. There were no records of women at the time.
III. It went to spread faster and increase the total number of cases adding up to 18,064. 14,975 in men and 3,089 in women.

I. Virulence is the severity or harmfulness of a disease. Chlamydia trachomatis targets epithelial cells within the body. They invade the body as elementary cells and then rapidly differentiate into reticulate bodies. Virulence can vary depending on the strain but most strains lead to severe infections and other health-related risks such as pelvic inflammation, infertility, and ectopic pregnancies.
II. When first detected and monitored Chlamydia trachomatis increased in virulence as more strains evolved and became more harmful. As we take steps towards creating more accessible preventative measures the virulence has slowed and decreased as there is medication to eliminate the disease in an individual. However, there are still instances of severe cases and untreated cases.

I. In the 18th and 19th centuries, venereal diseases were treated with mercury and sulfur, leading to more deaths from poisonings.
II. Chlamydia is now treated with antibiotics and increasing education on safe sex practices.
III. Increasing amounts of antibiotics are needed to get rid of the infection. Some antibiotics require multiple doses, doxycycline, and some only require one dose, azithromycin.

I. Governmental bodies and leadership responded to the increasing spread of chlamydia by increasing awareness of safe sex practices and education about the infection.
II. Some of the initiatives led by leadership are increasing funding to further develop tests and medicines to better identify and eliminate chlamydia. Some of these tests include at-home testing and testing at schools.
III. Leadership could help stop or slow the spread of chlamydia by increasing funding for research and creating a more accessible healthcare system. Reducing the stigma surrounding STIs and STDs would also help those infected more comfortable talking with their partners and medical officials.

I. When chlamydia first rose in the population there was a fear of infection and the long-lasting effects. There was an ever-increasing stigma of STIs and sex. As well as an increase in awareness of sexual diseases and the impacts of contracting the disease.
II. There was an increase in education for safe sex practices and an increase in normalizing testing for infections and diseases. Of course, there was still the remaining stigma but as cultures change so do the ideas surrounding hookup culture and safe sex education.
III. There has been increased education within schools and communities on how to practice safe sex and ways to reduce getting and spreading infections. Now more than ever it is more important to increase education on the long-term effects of infections and the contractions of diseases.
