Population Trends Map Pin Activity by Ms. Renaud

Pick a country (aside from Canada or the United States) and pin it on the map - please put your name and your country in the title. Next, I want you to utilize the interactive stats from Luminocity 3D, and review population trends of that country. In 1-2 paragraphs (approximately 5-8 sentences), please state the type of population (i.e. growth, decline, stable, etc.), explain why, and state where you believe the population is headed from the brief research you just did.

This mini activity will be graded out of 10 marks.

The country of South Africa has experienced a population growth in the last 40 years. From 1975 to 2015, the population doubled; growing from 25.7 million to 54.5 million. As of today, Tuesday May 4th, 2021, the WorldOMeters site states that the population of South Africa is approximately 59.9 million. In only 6 years, from 2015 to 2021, the population grew by almost 5 million individuals; this shows that the population of this country is growing very rapidly. Both the Built-Up Area and the Average Population Density have increased as well. The population density in 2015 was 1.93 individuals per kilometer squared whereas in 1975, the population density was only 1.09 individuals per kilometer squared. Also, we can see from the graph that around 12 million people live within 200-1000 kilometers of each other. I believe that the population has continued to grow, thus increasing the population density, because of the key factors of population growth. In this country, it is still very common for women to have many children; large families are the norm. As well, many communities have a lack of access to proper contraceptives. The country is becoming more and more stable, with better healthcare and more jobs, so the country is still experiencing a sort of baby boom.

In my opinion, the population will continue increasing but at a slower rate. With the increase in quality of education and healthcare systems, I am hopeful that more adolescents and young adults will wait longer to start families. Having more time between generations will aid in slowing down the population growth until it eventually reaches a stable level. This country is fairly small; it only boasts an area of 1.22 million kilometers squared. If the population continues to grow at its current rate, the country could face many crises in the housing, economic, and environmental districts. With a decline in the rapidness of the population growth. I believe that South Africa could flourish as a country, as they are rich in many minerals such as diamonds, gold, and iron ore.

Between the years of 2018 - 2021 Italys population has remained primarily the same. The only change which has happened within Italy's population the that time is a slight decrease between the years. The decrease throughout the years has only been under 1% each year though which is why there has not been any significant change. Along with the population lowering, the population density has also continued to lower throughout the years. Similar to the population, the population density has only decreased less than 1% over the years. I found it very interesting how little the population and the population density has shifted over the past few years in Italy.

Belgium is a small country in Western Europe. Belgium's population rate is growing but very slowly, I would consider it to be a stable population. Belgium's population has only increased 1.5 million since 1975 for an average of 37,500 people per year. Belgium is an aging population with an average age of almost 42 meaning over time there population will most likely begin to decline or stay steady for the future. Belgium is a small country in terms of mass and for its mass has a pretty large population. As of 2020 Belgium is ranked 9th in the world for population density. Belgium's steady growth and high average age is very important for them because if their population was growing rapidly they would run out of space and the country would be in shambles. I believe Belgium over time is either going to stay steady and increase very little overtime or they will begin to decrease because of their high average age and their decreasing fertility rates.

The country of France is located in Europe. The population in France has grown over the past 40 years. The population has increased from 52.7m in 1975 to 64.1m in 2015. On the site statistica, it states that unlike the majority of European countries, France appears to have a steady fertility rate of 1.9 children per woman. This is why the population in France continues to increase, along with the fact that France has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe. The average population density has decreased from 1.96 in 1975 to 1.59 in 2015. The built up area increased over the past 40 years, from 17.9 to 25.6.

I believe that the population will continue to grow, possibly even more rapidly in the next ten years. The number of people immigrating to France is growing, and people in France are living longer than before due to better healthcare, and easier access to resources like clean drinking water. The fertility rate is also the Highest in all of Europe. People in France are also becoming less crowded due to the high build up rates which makes more room for people to emigrate or for families to grow.

When looking at the population type for Mexico we can totally see a growth in the population numbers. When we look at the first year that is 1975 the population is only 60.7 million people. This begins to increase in year 1990 to 85.4 million, in 2000 to 102.5 million and finally the highest in 2015 to 126.7 million people. Just by looking at these numbers that I have stated I believe the population is headed to a growth seeing that from 2000-2015 they gained 24.2 million people. I think that Mexico is gaining so many people because of migration and families having more and more children. In Mexico, it is already hard for people to find jobs so when they begin to become overpopulated this can affect job opportunities in this country greatly! Think about it like this when so many people from Mexico are migrating and so many people are coming into Mexico it hurts the country. People who have had their jobs for years, could possible lose them to outsiders who have came and added to the population. I believe that Mexico is headed for a incline in their population status due to the information on the map, and due to migration, jobs, and many more factors! Also in the picture provided you can see just how crowded Mexico is getting with all of the houses!

The population in Sweden has slightly grown from 1975 to 2015 from 8.1 m to 9.6m, with an overall small population density from about 20k to 60k, with no area more than 28k. The average population density had a minor increase of 1.49 to 1.54. These statistics mean that Sweden has a stable population because of it's slow incline of population other than a dramatic boom, since this means that Sweden has time and resources to steadily provide for it's citizens which is easier to handle with the small population. As of 2020, the life expectancy of both genders is 83.3 years old which was still high in 1975 with 75.3 years old, while the infancy mortality rate has dramatically decreased from 7.75 to 1.72. This is due to the increase of medical care and technical advancements that lead them to being the seventh happiest country on Earth as of 2020. I believe Sweden is headed in the same direction where the population with slowly increase and that more people will be immigrating to Sweden because of it's welcoming lifestyle. The mortality rates will increase because of future advancements in technology and it will remain a low populated country.

Right now, Columbia is expected for their population to grow until 2050, then it may decrease after 2050 and decrease until 2099 to 43.4 Million. The reason of the decrease is because more and more women are infertile over the years. Which means the birth rate is going to be decreasing and by 2099 they will be down in the 40's. The population change since January in Columbia is approximately 134,000 people.

After analyzing the population of Brazil, I have discovered that it is a growing population. This population growth is attributed to numerous reasons, primarily the large number of Brazilian women entering the workforce and choosing to wait longer to have children. Their growth in population can be seen through their population statistics from 1975-2015 as seen in the Luminocity 3D interactive map. 108m people lived in Brazil in 1975, 149.7m in 1990, 175m in 2000, and 206.9m in 2015. Interestingly, the largest population by density class in 2015 was in the 2k-4k category. In addition, the average population density was 3.12 in 2015, compared to 2.08 in 1975.

After researching beyond the Luminocity map, I have discovered that the population increased again to 211 million in 2019. Because of this, I believe that the population of Brazil will continue increasing going forward.

In Japan, the Major cities hold a majority of the population as Tokyo can have up to 80,000 people per square kilometer. There also tends ton be more of a population density on edge of the country where the beaches are. This is predictable as beaches have nicer scenery and are usually warmer. However, the populations in the main lands almost have no body living there. This is also predictable the main land holds a lot of trees and wildlife. Japan has a declining population as they already have a huge population and the population is not holding the 2.1 reproduction rate. I believe Japan's population is going to decrease a bit, but I don't think there population will go under 100 million for the next couple decades. I also believe as more attractions are being built Tokyo, the population will begin to move to bigger cities. However Japan has had a declining rate of 0.3% and that number is thought to get even bigger as the population of women is low, and certain adult industries are having men choose industries over reproduction with women.

I noticed that there was population growth, making the population density increase overtime. The changes in population have not been drastic. This may be because of the less advanced medicines. With this kind of medical attention and the number of people living on the streets, there will certainly be less people living as long and more people dying of illness. This brings the amount of children being born and the amount of people dying to a more level state. This reduces/slows change in population growth.

According to Luminocity 3D parts of Nigeria (Lagos and Ibadan) have between 22k-80k residents per KM^2. Nigeria has a growing population as its population grows around 3.2% every year. This is due to the increased mortality rates and the continuity of high birth rates. After 1980, the birth rates increased severely due to low child mortality rates. However, now that life expectancy is greater, these birth rates stayed pretty much the same with only a slight decline over the years, causing dramatic increases over each year. Additionally, Nigeria is also an important destination for migrants from the West Africa area, further increasing the population. With the current population at around 201 million, and its averaged 3.2% increase every year, i suspect that in around 30 years the population will almost double and be around 400 million, a huge drastic increase if these birth rates stay where they are.

From the Luminocity 3D stats, it is evident that Australia's population has increased drastically. From 1975-2015, the population had almost doubled showing extreme growth. I think that Australia is a desirable place for people to live because they have extremely good societal values, access to resources, warm weather, and many other benefits. Also, a lot of elders decide to move to Australia to retire. In the future and from the global pandemic, a lot of people have began to look up to Australia and wish we had the same protocols as they did from the start of COVID. From this, I think people will begin to move there and cherish Australia for their way of dealing with COVID. From my research, about 60% of Australia's population growth has came from the Net Overseas Migration - which moved more people to Australia than expected. Australia also has one of the lowest population density's in the world and this is due to the desert geography of the land. This could be a strong reason someone would want to move to Australia because you look at somewhere like USA which has a population density of 35 people/km whereas Australia's is only 3.5 people/km. In the future, I don't believe overpopulation will happen because most of Australia is inhabitable but I do believe Australia is always going to be a desirable place to live.

Ukraine has a declining population, this is evident as it has gone from 48.6m in 1975 to 44.7m in 2015. it can be seen that Ukraine has only started this trend in 2000-2015 as there population had increased from 48.6m in 1975 to 51.3m in 1990. This trend that started in the early 1990's is due to the fact that Ukraine has a very high emigration rate coupled with its high death rates and low birth rates. Ukraine is intangled in border disputes with Russia, this has lead to the annexation of Crimea in 2014 by Russia. The annexation of Crimea has also played a role in the decline of Ukraine's population as it caused Ukraine to lose 1.967m of its population when it was annexed in 2014. I believe that Ukraine will continue to decline in its population due to the fact that it is just not a stable country at the moment as it is still in conflict with Russia. If this conflict is resolved then I believe that the years following this event will have a large populating re immigrating back into Ukraine as many cases of emigration have been caused by this conflict.

Mali has a large, growing population of 17.6 million individuals in the year 2015. Mali is considered a growing population because from each year shown on the 'World Population Density' map of Mali, the population has grown by millions. In 1975, the population was 6.5 million, growing by 2 million people in 15 years, making the population in 1990 8.5 million. After 1990, the population began to grow more quickly. In the year 2000 the population had grown to 11 million, a 2.5 million person increase in 10 years, and in 2015 the population had grown to 17.6 million people in 15 years. That is a 6.6 million person population increase. Now, in 2021, the population of Mali is about 20.7 million individuals stated by Worldometer. That is I believe about a 3.1 million person increase in under 6 years. Based on these statistics I would assume that as the years go on, Mali will continue to increase in individuals, and have a growing population.

Croatia has a stable population. From 1975 to 2015, the population has only increased or decreased a couple 100,000. The largest decrease of population density happened from 1975 to 1990, as it went from 1.89 to 1.49. For the next 25 years the population density only decreased by 0.04. With the statistic provided, I believe that the population of Croatia will remain stable for years to come. The population will also continue to slowly decrease as more people migrate to more populated areas.

The population of Kenya has been on a steady increase throughout the years. In 1975 it was only 13.5m. It had the biggest jump from 1975 to 1990 (up 9.9m). Most recently in 2019, the population stands at 52.6m. This has also resulted in the population density increasing. Majority of the population is located in the capital, Nairobi (2.7m habitants). I believe the population of Kenya will continue to grow at a steady rate. After looking at a line graph on google, it shows the stable upwards slope.

South Korea - Mariam

South Korea is a small country (97,100 sq km) that is home to around 53,165,000 people making the country 27 in population ranking. (Despite it being #107 in the country size ranking) In addition to that, roughly around 25 million of the population which is almost half of the whole population resides in the capital, Seoul alone. In my point of view, I believe that the population of South Korea will slowly decline over time. The average South Korean woman only has one child in their lifetime, making birth rates low. Not only that, more and more youth are begining to push off marriage and the life expectancy has increased. This means that with shrinking families, South Korean youth staying single, low birth rates, rapid ageing population as well as a changing one, the population is clearly predicted to decrease.

Brazil, I have discovered that it is a growing population.

In 1975 the United Kingdom had a population of 55.8 million. In 2015 their population was 64.3 million. In 30 years the UK's population has grown around 8.5 million, this shows that the country has an increasing population. While the UK's population has grown their population density has ultimately stayed in the same rage. In 1975 the UK had an average population density of 2.10 and in 2015 it was 2.33. I believe that the United Kingdom's population will continue to grow in the future, according to the stats, the population should grow at a rapid rate, because from 2000-2015 the population grew around 6 million. This country is beautiful, it's not shocking that the population is growing rapidly.

From 1950 to 1990 South Korea's population has had a significant increase in growth. The population in 1950 was 1.0 million, then in 1990 the population reached 10.5 million. The reason for this growth was due to the end of the Korean War. After the 90's the population became stable because of a steadying economy. In the last few decades the population fluctuated. This could be because of an aging population.
