We want the BEST for the students we serve, so it shouldn't matter where a student come from. EVERY student can learn and that's where we need to start. But more resources should be poured into the communities that needs it the most first and then to everyone else. Educators have a responsibility to discover the "gold" that is within every child sitting in their classroom. They must be able to look beyond a student's behavior, family challenges, or outside influences to see all of the potential a student has. After all, you will find whatever you seek. If you look for the gold in every child, you will find it.

I believe that the role of the adults in a child's life have the job to expose them to multiple different topics and activities so that each child/ person is able to find that gift. Finding that gift should not be based on family difficulties, behavior or monitary challenges. So many comments come  to mind,  however,  I feel it's all just talk. Why keep revisiting and never changing. "ALL" deserve the same, need to be given the same, and they all should require the same. Will it happen? When? I'm so tired of these topics and responding, when I see 👀 no action taken.

I believe in what the article states, that students need to feel and see that someone believes in them. I also think it is important for students to believe in themselves. This is sometimes difficult to manifest in a student, especially if they struggle in school. Teachers need to try to instill in them that they can do it and that they can learn. One way to do this that I think is important and something I try to do is getting to know my students. Know what they like, know about their family, know their skills and where they stand acadically. Students know when you take the time to learn about them and their family. It builds a relationship with them. In college, I studied words and the connotations of words. The very word LABEL in regards to a human being holds a negative connotation. For example, a thin person would rather be called "slender" than "bony" because "bony" has a negative connotation. When people label a child, it is hard for even that student to break out the box and think of themselves as anything else otherwise. If we place students in an environment that categorizes and devalues them, they will work to the capacity of that label. Students always rise to the expectations and opportunities provided to them. No child wants to feel defeated and no parent wants their child to fail. So imagine if we provide all students the opportunity to engage in higher educational and "gifted" curriculum... Unfortunately the system is not set up for that because it would tilt the balance of power. Education is power. A power that some are not willing to share so we keep labeling to keep minorities "in check" with the systems that have ruled for so many decades.
