- The prison was used to keep Vietnamese revolutionaries and imprison freedom fighters.

- Life inside the prison was very hard. The cells were small, dark, and crowded. Prisoners had very little food and bad water, so many of them became weak and sick.

- But even in such a cruel place, many prisoners stayed strong. They encouraged each other, shared knowledge, and continued to believe in the fight for freedom."

- Hoa Lo Prison originally located in Phu Khanh hamlet, former Tho Xuong District.

- This hamlet used to make stoves or ovens, so prison was given the name Hoa Lo, it means “fiery furnace”.

- The prison was known for its cramped, dark cells, and cruel form of torture, so people called it “The Hell of Hell”.

- Today, Hoa Lo Prison has become a historical museum. The main gate is still kept, together with many objects and photos. It shows the strong spirit and bravery of Vietnamese fighters in their struggle for independence

The Imprisonment of Political Prisoners at Hoa Lo

- In the past, political prisoners held here had to endure extremely harsh punishments.

- Besides being shackled, locked up after dinner, or forced into hard labor, they were sometimes thrown into the dark cells – known as the “hell of hells.”

- At Block E, prisoners were chained by their feet on wooden platforms, packed tightly in hot and suffocating rooms. This was one of the brutal methods the French used to suppress Vietnamese patriots.

- One famous case is the poisoning plot in Hanoi. The participants were mainly Vietnamese cooks and soldiers.

- They planned to poison about 2,000 French troops, then give the signal for revolutionary forces outside to attack the citadel. Unfortunately, the plan was uncovered. Thirteen Vietnamese were arrested and executed, while no French soldiers were killed.

- Here you can also see the dark cells – called Cachot. These were used to punish prisoners who broke prison rules. The Cachot was extremely narrow, damp, and without light.

- Prisoners had to eat, sleep, and relieve themselves right inside.

- After only a short time, they suffered from swelling, blindness, and skin diseases due to the lack of air, light, and hygiene.

- In 1932, Truong Chinh, who later became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was imprisoned here after he led a political prisoners’ rally to celebrate International Workers’ Day, May 1st.

Guillotine

Here we have the guillotine, which was transferred from France and placed in Hoa Lo Prison. It was used by the French colonists to execute Vietnamese political prisoners. The guillotine became a symbol of fear, aiming to discourage resistance movements. When you look at it, you can truly feel the cruelty and brutality of colonial rule.

Prison Utensils

Over here, you can see the daily utensils used by the prisoners. The wooden bucket was used to store rice, while the bowls were made from dried coconut shells, and the chopsticks from tropical almond branches. These simple objects reflect how poor and miserable the living conditions were. The prisoners had to survive with very limited and low-quality food, yet they still kept their strong spirit.

Prison Breakouts

“This section tells us about the famous prison breakouts. Despite strict supervision and harsh conditions, many revolutionaries managed to escape from Hoa Lo. The most remarkable escapes happened in 1932, 1945, and 1951. These events showed the extraordinary courage and determination of Vietnamese patriots. Nowadays, instead of being a place of suffering, Hoa Lo has become a museum where visitors can learn about the nation’s history and resilience.”

Here on the left , we can see American pilots during the war. Even as prisoners, they were allowed to join collective activities, showing Vietnam’s humanitarian policy — very different from the harsh treatment under the French.

Now on the right , we have Pete Peterson , a former U.S. pilot once held here. Years later, he returned as the first American Ambassador to Vietnam in 1995 — a powerful symbol of reconciliation.

Moving to the next photo , this is Senator John McCain during his visit in 2000. Shot down over Truc Bach Lake in 1967 and imprisoned here, he later played a key role in strengthening Vietnam–U.S. relations.

And finally , the last picture shows the old almond tree inside the prison. For more than a century, it has been a silent witness to both suffering and resilience. For prisoners, this tree symbolized strength and hope during the darkest days, and today it stands as a living reminder of freedom and peace.

The design of separate detention spaces prevented prisoners from sleeping, and covered them in darkness. Those who were locked up here for a period of time suffered from edema, scabies, and malnutrition due to lack of hygiene and sunlight. Not only were prisoners tortured by savage methods, they were also forced to do heavy labor such as repairing houses, doing labor in the prison guards' residences, pounding rice, or doing labor on the battlefields.

Death row inmates awaiting execution are held in a separate area deep inside the prison, having to pass through three iron gates.

Hoa Lo Prison as a clear testament to a period of hardship and suffering, Hoa Lo Prison also symbolizes the indomitable and resilient spirit of patriotic Vietnamese people.

Welcome to Hỏa Lò Prison, once called “Hell on Earth in the heart of Hà Nội.” When French colonials built it in 1896, they proundly claimed it was the most solid prison in Indochina — a place no one could ever escape.

But history proved otherwise. Here, three famous escapes showed that no bars, no chains, and no dungeon could ever break the human spirit.

First in late 1932, many revolutionary leaders were jailed here. The underground Party organization decided some must break free to continue the struggle.

Seven prisoners cleverly pretended to be seriously ill, so they were transferred to Phủ Doãn Hospital — today’s Việt Đức Hospital. On Christmas Eve, while church bells rang they sawed through window bars, slipped past barbed wire, and disappeared into the festive crowd.

The French were furious, launching a massive citywide manhunt. But by then, the prisoners had already rejoined the movement.

After that thirteen years later, in March 1945, Japan overthrew French rule. Security at Hỏa Lò weakened, and the prisoners seized their chance.

In the largest breakout in Hỏa Lò’s history, more than 100 political prisoners escaped in many ways: climbing walls, mixing with family visitors, or crawling through sewage tunnels.

They quickly spread across the provinces, returning just in time to lead the August Revolution of 1945, which gave birth to an independent Việt Nam.

And finally once again, on Christmas Eve of 1951, sixteen political prisoners on death row attempted a daring escape.

They cut through iron bars and crawled through the dark, filthy sewage tunnels.When they surfaced on Quán Sứ Street, French patrols were waiting. After a fierce chase, twelve were recaptured, but five reached freedom
