He was born on May 21, 1904 in Harlem, New York. His family was a musician family with his grandpa who was a violinist and his mother who was one of the organists of their church. He first started to get into music when he started to do church hymns and organ music. When he was younger his mother hired a tutor for him to learn how to play piano and read music. At age 14 his mother had passed away and he moved in with his piano tutors family. When he was 15 he was playing the organ in Harlem at a silent theatre for $23 a week. In 1926 he signed with RCA Victor Label. He also was an entertainer and appeared on the radio a bunch. He wrote the first non-black musical and took a role in Stormy Weather.
