Purpose: The purpose of this modernized assessment is to see the areas in which students are excelling or struggling, in order to better remediate or enrich instruction. The assessment measures real-world application, and sets expectations for students that align with Common Core state standards.
Who takes the assessment: Students in grades 3-8 take this annual year-end test; teachers may also use instructional tools throughout the year. These are tools for all grades k-8th and can be performance modules, speaking and listening activities, diagnostic testing, and other formative assessments. These all help to inform teachers of the student's progress with the standards throughout the year.
Who administers the assessment: Schools and districts make the decision of whether or not they would like to use these assessments as data, or to use these tests in order to align with state standards. As of now, only a handful of states have adopted this assessment (i.e. District of Colombia, Colorado, Louisiana, Kentucky, etc).
Public's Interest: There are many people who praise this test because it aligns with the standards, it focuses on real world math application problems, and also it gives feedback to teachers about the levels that students are performing in at each level of the test. Many teachers like this assessment because they feel that it is a tool that can predict college and career readiness. Many educators say this test is highly acceptable and accessible to students who speak other languages, and students with physical disabilities.

Purpose: The purpose of the SBAC is to offer students a personalized assessment that allows them to truly show what they know. This assessment is customizable due to the fact that the questions asked are based on how students are answering the questions. For example, if a student consistently gets answers correct, they will get more challenging questions. However, if a student consistently gets incorrect answers, the questions will get easier. This assessment was created by educators, and has many beneficial factors. Firstly, teachers may use this test throughout the year in order to monitor student progress. This test also aligns with common core standards, and is a predictor for college and career readiness. The creators of this assessment have also created formative assessments in order to provide students with actionable feedback which allows students to adjust to instruction accordingly. This assessment also helps at-risk students by providing a glossary, and language supports for English Language Learners.
Who takes it: Students who are in 3rd-8th grade; and in high school. Two-hundred and fifty-six universities in ten different states are now accepting SBAC scores as entrance into college along with other requirements.
Who administers it: classroom teachers/approved by the district
Public's interest: Many educators like the types of questions that are asked on the SBAC. They do not just limit the questions to multiple choice, but rather constructed response, real-world problem solving, and performance task questions. Students are asked questions that try to assess the depth of knowledge and how deep the understanding is for every child.
