Nelson Mandala was born on the 18^th of  July 1918 and died in 5 December 2013. He was the first President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Nelsons election was the first time blacks South African were able to vote.

Around 50 years ago, in 1964  Mandela and along with many other black extremists  were in the struggle for the freedom of South Africa. He was fighting  racist and white domination under apartheid. During his time in the ANC ( African National Congress is the Republic of South Africa's governing political party) he was prosecuted and finally arrested for conspiring to overthrow the state.

One of his statements he had made to the court,  “A judiciary controlled entirely by whites and enforcing laws enacted by a white parliament in which Africans have no representation - laws which in most cases are passed in the face of unanimous opposition from Africans “ Showed  he still remained  defiance and resistance but in 1962 he was  sentenced to life imprisonment.

He would spend 27 years caged by the brutal racist regime in South Africa, but before the resistance had movement there had a worldwide solidarity campaign that helped to force his release. There was a famous song written about him calling for his freedom while he was in prison. “Free Nelson Mandela" is a song written by British musician Jerry Dammers in 1984. Many times, the apartheid government dangled a pardon in front of Mandela if he would agree to publicly renounce the armed struggle, but he refused.

 After being released after much presser form all over the world. The ANC won 62% of the election votes. Nelson became  the leader of ANC, was introduced on 10 May 1994 as the country's first black President, with the National Party's F.W. de Klerk as his first deputy and Thabo Mbeki as the second in the Government of National Unity.

After he left prison, he worked to achieve human rights and a better future for everyone in South Africa. An example of his faith and amazing belief in the human race was at the moment of his release, Mandela remembered the important’s of  renewal ahead of external change. "As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn't leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison.

One of Nelson Mandela's famous quotes was thought to show his deep  Christian ideals - "until I changed myself, I could not change others". That expression of being born again, the need for internal change before one can lead others to their own change” was just one of many expressions of faith he shared through his life.
