My welcoming routine is simple. The goal is to get students to trust me by being open and honest with my feelings and things that upset me. We have talked about things that rub us the wrong way, things that make us happy, and reasons why we are so scared to fail! Every single day I leave the students with this...."Excuses are tools of the incompetent...that you are not". I am trying to teach them that failure is okay and it only helps you grow!

Ike: Opening up to students about how you feel can be so powerful! It sets the stage for a safe place to communicate their thoughts, values, and feelings. When this happens, SEL is at its peek! Great work!

I think doing some role-playing could be a fun way to show some SEL techniques/methods. Virtual or in-person!

Ike: I love this! There is a wonderful class that teaches teachers how to use improv in their classrooms. The teacher's name is Jim Ansaldo. You can email him at jansaldo@indiana.edu

At the beginning of each lesson, we do a check in. They range from: How are you feeling?, to something more playful like Would you Rather. The students are familiar and participate daily in this routine.

Ike: These are awesome strategies for increasing engagement with students. Starting the class or as a form of engaging pedagogy throughout a lesson. The trick is to get the students used to jumping into these strategies and then back on track with the lesson with minimal distraction. This takes time but with consistency the kids come to understand the expectation and love the opportunity for interactions and connection. Well done!

I used the idea of opening rituals today when I was starting virtual kids on a NWEA test. before each student was released to do their test I had them verbally affirm that they would take their time and not open extra tabs/windows. None of them did and they were able to test without errors. It's a powerful tool we can use to set the stage for success in many ways. Thank you!
