My name is Lauren and throughout this Wall I will be explaining how I can support families and their children, as well as describing some of my major influences! From the time I can remember, educating others has always been a passion of mine and working with children is what makes me truly happy. With that being said, I found teaching to be a fitting career. I will be setting up my own preschool program that expresses everything I value for childhood development and education. For my preschool program, children will be encouraged to learn through play. Play assists children with learning social and cognitive skills. In addition to that, I will set up various activities that will allow children to explore, using all five senses. Development during a child's early years is a crucial time and it is something I strive to be apart of. I would have never discovered any of my interests without the impactful individuals that can be found listed below...

Theories of Development and Learning

One theory of development and learning that can be found in my classroom is the Sociocultural Theory. This theory was created by Lev Semenovich Vygotaky, and he believed that children learn through observation, from both their family and peers. Also, a child's culture also plays a role into how a child develops. In Who Am I in the Lives of Children, the authors state, "children are active participants in their own learning and that they construct their understanding." (130). This quote symbolizes exactly what I want to accomplish in my classroom.

Children will be encouraged to analyze what they observe and make their own reasoning's of things around them. In addition, the Sociocultural Theory has inspired me to set up activities that allow children to engage and collaborate with each other. For example, having children create a piece of artwork and explain their creation to a group.

Feeney, S. Moravcik, E. Nolte, S.
Historical Antecedents

There are many historical antecedents that inspire how I will support the learning and development of the children in my classroom. John Dewey is one of my major influences, due to the fact that he valued play. As mentioned before, play will be expressed throughout my classroom. For example, children will have the opportunity to develop their fine motor skills through painting or playing with funnels and scoops in the sensory table.

Dewey also believed that curriculum should be built off of the child's interest. A quote from the text expresses that, "Children investigated the world around them and engaged with subject matter that expanded their natural curiosity." (83). I believe that if a child is not interested in the topic, they are not going to have the drive to learn about it. I plan to fill my lesson plan with activities children can relate to.

Feeney, S. Moravcik, E. Nolte, S.
Approaches to Education

Progressive education is one of the approaches that really highlight my vision for my preschool program. Progressive education is designed to teach children as a whole. By this, I mean that educators will focus on the child's social, physical, emotional, and intellectual development. Every aspect of a child should be addressed and focused on.

Another approach I found worth mentioning is the Reggio Emilia Approach. One of the reasons I find this approach so captivating is that it focuses on making school a community and the environment is such a critical part of the education process. For example, "Educators often refer to the learning environment as the "third teacher" because children construct understanding of the world through their interactions with it" (92). With that being said, my classroom will be welcoming and provide the children with various educational opportunities.

Feeney, S. Moravcik, E. Nolte, S.
