Washington's army crossed the icy Delaware river to sneak attack the drunken Hessians the day after Christmas morning when they knew they wouldn't be prepared.
Not only did this battle show the great leadership of George Washington, but it also reasserted American control of much of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.
