"All at once she found in a black satin box, a superb diamond necklace; and her pulse beat faster with longing" (202).

Explanation
In this quote, this is when Mathilde finds the necklace that ultimately seals her terrible fate to live a life of hard labor. She comes across the beautifull necklace that represents all of the wealth she longed for. She was tempted by the big diamonds, and borrowed it from her friend Madam Forestier. Mathilde wore this to the prestigious reception where she mingled with the height of society for one night.

The fake necklace represents the theme that wealth is not important and is valued too highly in society. The symbol of the story was introduced when the main character, Mathilde Loisel, went to her friend Mme. Forestier to borrow a necklace. She would not go to the ball with out jewelry for fear of looking poor among the wealthy. But, she did not know the great consequences from her vain need of looking wealthy.
After dancing at the ball, Mathilde lost the necklace. She did not want to seem a poor thief to Mme. Forestier so she and her husband bought a replacement necklace for thirty-six- thousand francs. They underwent ten years of hard labor before they were finally out of debt. Mathilde, now old and withered from working, ran into her old friend Mme. Forestier. Her debt was paid so she confessed to her friend only to discover the original necklace was fake; it was only worth five-hundred francs.

"'Oh, my poor Mathilde. But mine was fake. Why, at most it was worth only five hundred francs!'" (206)

Explanation
This is the part of the story where Mathilde finally reveals to Madam Forestier that she lost her necklace ten years ago. Mathilde also informs Madam Forestier that she has caused her a life of hard labor and stress from the necklace she had to replace. Madam Forestier tells Mathilde her necklace was a fake, and at most it cost only five hundred francs, not thirty-six thousand francs which is what Mathilde paid. Ultimately, Mathilde is devastated and wasted ten years of her life with unneeded labor and stress.
