She would not go to the ball with out jewelry for fear of looking poor among the wealthy. But, she did not know the great consequences from her vain need of looking wealthy.
After dancing at the ball, Mathilde lost the necklace. She did not want to seem a poor thief to Mme. Forestier so she and her husband bought a replacement necklace for thirty-six- thousand francs. They underwent ten years of hard labor before they were finally out of debt. Mathilde, now old and withered from working, ran into her old friend Mme. Forestier. Explanation
This is the part of the story where Mathilde finally reveals to Madam Forestier that she lost her necklace ten years ago. Madam Forestier tells Mathilde her necklace was a fake, and at most it cost only five hundred francs, not thirty-six thousand francs which is what Mathilde paid.
