The colosseum in its prime would capture men and women for battle, to use as entertainment for the spectators. There would be many events that the colosseum would take part in, depending on the sponsor of that specific day. This could be anything from sea battles to a men fighting a lion. The Romans used slaves for everything, from the making of the Colosseum to the participants used in battle for other entertainment. The slaves built the Colosseum in 8-10 years. If this was any other empire it could have taken any where from 100-200 years. Know one's knows how many slaves it took to build it, but it was estimated that it took 60,000 jewish slaves to build.
