Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804 and died May 19, 1864. "Hawthorne's ancestors had lived in Salem since the 17th century." and his earliest American ancestor was a strong defender of Puritan orthodoxy. When Nathanial Hawthorne's father died he left his mom caring for him and his two sisters. He went to Bowdoin College for 4 years and spent nearly a dozen years learning how to write fiction novels.

Hawthorne started writing novels right out of college and made one named "Fanshawe" which he thought was unworthy of himself and tried to destroy all the copies of it. Although his first novel wasn't the greatest, within 5 years of his graduation he had made very impressive stories such as "The Hollow of the Three Hills" and "An Old Woman's Tale".]]> 2018-08-31 11:45:04 UTC https://padlet.com/zm02775/rgkzxm1alq6w/wish/276856588 zm02775 https://padlet.com/zm02775/rgkzxm1alq6w/wish/276861745 The first theme of Scarlet letter is   sin. This is the most prominent one of the story because it all revolves around Hester committing the crime of adultery. Towards the beginning of the story the author shows that Hester had a child and was being publicly shunned which set the stage for the rest of the novel where Hester lived on the outskirts of town being neglected by everyone. Another theme of the Scarlet Letter is passion. The Scarlet Letter can also be viewed as a love story instead of a sinful one. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other but have people such as Chillingworth pulling them back. Hester does'nt only show love for Dimmesdale, she shows a lot of love towards her daughter too. She and Dimmesdale named her Pearl to show how much of a treasure she is to them.

The scarlet letter is mostly known as a symbol of sin due to Hester wearing it on her chest. She not only wears the scarlet letter on her chest but she sews the letter "A" on her shirt to show ownership of what she has done. 

The meteor seen by dimmesdale, hester, and pearl is also a symbol because it was said to be a sign from god and a symbol that shows the governer is an angel and that Dimmesdale must also wear the "A" for adultery. Once settled, the Puritans created a theocratic government and allowed for virtually no religious freedom. Anyone with different religious beliefs such as Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were banished. Someohow they got a following and had grown to over 20,000 inhabitants. Life as a Puritan doesn't seem like the greatest due to the fact that they thought they were doing the work of god so there was zero room for error. Male supremacy was also a terrible problem and got to the point where women pregnant with boys were seen as better looking than those pregnant with girls. Adulters were known to have bad punishments and being banished was the best case scenario because a few were executed.
