There were three main sections, Northeast, Middle, and Southern colonies. The northern colonies were known for more industrial economies with more religious freedom while the middle and southern colonies heavily relied on agriculture. The southern colonies also greatly relied on chattel slave labor, much more than the other colonies, since they had larger plantations that required more labor for cheaper.

During the French and Indian war, the US colonies fought alongside the British, trying to gain control of the Ohio River Valley. After said war, the British were down for money, so they heavily taxed the colonies (Stamp Act, Sugar Act, and the Quartering Act were a few of the more controversial taxes). The Boston Massacre was the camel that broke the straw's back, leading to the Boston Tea Party, and consequentially, the American Revolution (or as British "people" still call it to this day, the British Civil War).

The colonists had to hold two Continental Congress meetings, and then sent a very fancy passive aggressive letter to the British king (the Declaration of Independence), whom Thomas Jefferson mostly wrote. The climactic ending of the American Revolution happened in Yorktown (the British were super creative at naming things, weren't they?). Through purchases like the Ohio River Valley, and as well as the annexation of Texas and the Mexican-American war, we had the known structure down for the United States we know today... minus Alaska and Hawaii, but no one really pays attention to them anyways. (I had someone tell me Hawaii was a country).

And so we spread westward, settling along the Midwest in crappy little grass houses. And since we had such a huge new expanse of land to conquer, the question of slavery spreading to the west came into mind.

Abolitionists of the North, and pro-slavery people of the South argued non-stop about the case of slavery in the west. They settled on the 36'30" line, a parallel that went across the country and divided it into free and slave states- but tensions rose when the Missouri compromise was had, and all hell broke loose when Abraham Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation- making slavery illegal only in the south.

After a long and grueling civil war between the Union (anti-slavery northerners that wanted to keep the country unified), and confederates (pro-slavery southerners that wanted to become their own sovereign country). It all ended when Robert E. Lee (the confederate leader-general) signed a surrender in the Appomattox courthouse, coincidentally near the same place the war started.

And so, slavery was abolished with the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution, but equality was still far from here. Instances like the separation of public spaces, to even water fountains being segregated by race (which is ridiculous?!), Jim Crow laws covered every last trace in an attempt to keep white people separated from black people, as well as oppressing the same black people.

For instance, voting was nearly impossible for newly freed black Americans. Why? Because of literacy tests. The fact that black Americans who were just freed from slavery, who mostly could not read or write, having to take a literacy test that was rigged against them and for white voters, made it very hard for them to advocate for themselves in the political scene.

But now that slavery was illegal, many plantations and newly opening industrial factories and railroad companies- telegraph lines too- needed cheap labor. In reality, for the many immigrants passing through Ellis and Angel islands, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and work abuse awaited. Labor unions were still not a thing- and even after they were made many did not represent immigrants- so unsafe work environments, unfair payment, and discrimination were rampant in the workplace for these newcomers to the US.

Throughout the war, a similar usage of trench-warfare was done on both sides. Both sides would be separated by an unclaimed are- No Man's Land. On either side of no man's land would be trenches, a series of foxholes and tunnels spanning in the dirt, and filled with weaponry, soldiers, and other supplies.

After the war ended, there was a meeting of the leaders of these countries... except for Germany. Germany wasn't invited. During this meeting, there was the drafting of the treaty of Versailles, a peace treaty that put all the blame and debt onto Germany, which threw it into a massive depression. There was also the proposition of the League of Nations, proposed by American president at the time, Woodrow Wilson. The LoN is a predecessor of the more well known NATO, and it ultimately failed. Then hit the Great Depression. The Great Depression was causes by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The banks couldn't withdraw all this money that people put into stocks because they didn't have any to give. People became as poor as ever and didn't want to trust banks with their money. Germany invaded Poland which then lead to France and Britain declaring war on Germany two days later. To make this happen, Hitler made a pact with Russia to make sure they wouldn't interfere with his invasion. Soon after taking over Poland, Norway, Belgium and the Netherlands, Hitler occupied Paris, France. France was now split in two and Hitler began to bomb London. Following this, Hungry, Romania, and Bulgaria joined Germany as Axis powers. Hitler then broke the pact made with Russia and invaded them but lost which was the turning point in the war. This caused Russia to join Britain and France in fighting against Germany. The US had not been in the war...up until now. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor which initiated the US joining the Allied powers. Once the US joined, it was over for Germany, Midway to Stalingrad to D-Day. Win after win, the Allied powers pushed back Germany. The final blow was two nuclear bombs dropped in Okinawa and Hiroshima that finally ended WW2. But with the creation of those bombs opened up and entire new picture of war, nuclear war. When these events were happening outside the US, big changes were happening inside.
This "war" influenced desegregation because it brought international attention to the failings of the United States government. Since the prevention of communism was a view of everyone becoming equal, many protests for equality among the African American community.
