Wendy Kolberg

Intentionally planning experiences to observe specific characteristics in students supports me as an educator by helping me move from assumptions to purposeful, evidence-based decision making. When I know what behaviors or dispositions I am looking for—such as perseverance, creativity, emotional regulation, or motivation, I can more accurately identify student strengths and needs, differentiate instruction, and respond with targeted supports rather than one-size-fits-all strategies. This intentionality also strengthens my ability to reflect on my practice and adjust instruction to better meet the diverse academic and affective needs of learners.

For students, these planned experiences create safe, meaningful opportunities to demonstrate who they are beyond traditional academic measures. Students benefit from being seen and understood for their unique characteristics, which increases engagement, self-awareness, and confidence. When learners recognize that their thinking processes, effort, and growth are valued, they are more likely to take risks, persist through challenges, and develop a stronger sense of agency in their learning.
