Developing a personal practice and understanding in yoga and mindfulness is essential when trying to incorporate it into the classroom. The more advanced you become in your own practice, the more students will buy into it. A personal yoga practice shows commitment, motivation, and the desire to make yoga a part of your everyday routine. It also shows students the benefits and growth as it is continued and infused into daily classroom routines.

Our school is trying out yoga this year in specials classes. In my classroom, I would like to build off what they are doing and allow students to practice yoga each day in my classroom. I have a cool down corner with many stress balls and
fidget toys. In my cool down corner, I would like to add note cards with the Take 5 breathing variations, lazy eight breathing and the yoga pretzels cards that were donated to our school. Before adding them, I would like to introduce them to the entire class and explain the benefit and why we use them to calm down and notice our feelings. "Giving students the ability to self-regulate, is required for a student to learn successfully within the context of relationships and in the classroom environment" Cook-Cottone, p. 19). My hope is for students to remember these strategies and use them in middle school and beyond.

Based on the learning and practice thus far, I would like to incorporate two goals I will achieve by the end of this year for my students and myself.

Goal One: Use one variation of the Take 5 practice three times per week with my 5th grade students.

Goal Two: Allow myself to practice yoga once per week even when this class ends. With that, introduce a new yoga position and yoga moral to my students each week.

The cool down corner is a place where students go when they begin feeling frustrated. In the cool down corner, there is also a list of breathing techniques and yoga the students can engage in to calm down and refocus. The text states, "A student with knowledge of breathing techniques, who can slow his or her breath, find grounding and stillness within his or her own body, and act with intention, even when triggered and upset, has a substantial advantage in today's schools" (Cook-Cottone. p. 19). Therefore, providing students with a place to calm down and the skills to do so, will allow them to have a successful learning environment.

According to the text all Tier One, Two and Three behaviors can be changed through yoga and mindfulness if done correctly and consistently. If the teacher is modeling how to correctly use breathing and yoga in a time of stress and difficulty, students can learn these skills and thrive at their highest academic potential. "Yoga and mindfulness cannot increase IQ, but there is growing evidence that suggests it can help students handle stress, trauma and self-regulate in order to be successful in the classroom" Cook-Cottone, p. 41)
