It's estimated recent floods in New South Wales and Queensland destroyed 8,500 hives and some of the hives that survived unscathed were now being attacked by small hive beetle.

Many of the hives destroyed by flooding would have been used to pollinate blueberry, macadamia and seed canola crops.

Last year, 277,000 beehives were needed to pollinate almond orchards.
