My personal reflection - 250 words a reflection on my contribution

My reflection of my shopping district task. I was responsible for making the video so I did my best to capture the general vibe of Battersea Power Station. Capture what it’s like to visit and the types of people that are shopping and visiting. We visited on Wednesday about 11am - 1pm, the whole area was relatively quiet, I think it’s the type of place that is a lot busier on the weekends. The types of people that we saw were mainly construction workers that are still working on the redevelopment, the occasional business man and woman walking by to grab a coffee or a quick lunch. We saw a few older groups of ladies shopping, but the types of shops are more high end, which says that it is not the shopping district for those on a tight budget, but those with a little more disposable income. We saw some families walking around and using the playground onsite. We also saw a few remote workers who were set up in cafes and restaurants working.

Battersea power station would appeal to those who like to shop at Zara as it boasts the largest Zara and Zara Home store. The whole area was very clean and the shops were immaculate. It was a very pleasant area to walk around and has been made pedestrian friendly most of the way around to make a more pleasant shopping, strolling experience. Battersea Power Station would also appeal to tourists with its location along the Thames. It also has a little museum inside and a lovely food court.

Trend or Subculture Influences

I feel as though certain trends and subcultures have influenced my fashion style. I grew up in the 90’s in small remote agricultural part of New Zealand. The fashion where I am from is what I would describe as very basic, minimalist and functional.

I never felt inspired from what I saw people around me wearing, but took inspiration from music videos, movies and fashion magazines. The mall was my favourite place as a teen, mainly because there weren’t many other places to go! But also so I could wear what I thought were “cool clothes”

I come from very humble beginnings so I always knew where the local charity shops were and found joy in hunting for the perfect outfit amongst mountains of clothes. Sustainability, vintage and repurposing garments is important to me.

I have always loved using fashion as a way to express yourself and identity. I feel like my fashion sense is ever growing and I am very interested and accepting of new ideas / trends. I don’t feel stuck or super loyal to any particular look or style. Perhaps I am more loyal to colour palettes, I like to wear colours that I think suit me, such as different shades of browns, beiges, and occasional pops of colour.

I prefer like to dress for comfort and my body type also as I know certain outfits styles work / do not work on me.

I am also very passionate about sustainable fashion and do not like to support fast fashion brands. Which ties into my approach to fashion from a young age. I would wear my sisters hand me down clothes and try to style certain garments to look new and fresh.

I would say my wardrobe is quite small and as my experience of sewing develops I would like to make more and more of my own pieces as this also ties into my very purposeful sentimental nature.

I would say the sustainability / vintage trend has had an impact on me as I feel very passionate about trying to be a more conscious consumer. I love the idea of vintage and keeping any new wardrobe pieces in the most pristine condition so that they may become vintage one day and that I can pass them down to loved ones when I am older.

I grew up watching shows like friends and always loved Rachels outfits, textured mini skirts, boots, turtlenecks, scarfs, cute tops, blazers.

I feel that if I had an unlimited budget I would be more than happy creating a full wardrobe out of Ralph Lauren clothes, I find their pieces classy, timeless and well made. I also love the colour palette.

The Rebel Exhibition was really inspiring. It’s so nice to see the garments up close and to be able to see some research and sketch books. I found it really interesting to see the designers process from start to finish. It gave me some ideas for executing my current project and also thinking about future projects. It is also exciting to think about the fact that some of these designers were once students and then they have been selected to be a part of NEWGEN. It is quite exciting and motivating to think about.
