Three signs of stress to watch out for:

Increased Irritability or Frustration: One of the first signs that an employee may be struggling with stress is a noticeable change in their mood. If someone who is usually calm becomes easily frustrated or irritable, this could indicate that they are feeling overwhelmed by the changes around them.

Decreased Productivity or Engagement: Stress can significantly impact an employee’s ability to focus, leading to a decrease in productivity. If someone who was once highly engaged becomes distracted, disengaged, or starts missing deadlines, it’s often a sign that stress is taking a toll on their mental health.

Physical Symptoms: Stress can manifest physically in various ways, including headaches, fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, or even gastrointestinal issues. Employees who start experiencing unexplained physical symptoms may be dealing with the mental and emotional strain of workplace change.

Three strategies to help deal with change:

Clear Communication and Transparency: One of the most effective ways to help employees deal with change is by ensuring clear, consistent, and transparent communication. When employees understand the reasons behind a change and how it will affect them, it reduces uncertainty and helps them feel more in control. Open lines of communication also allow employees to ask questions, voice concerns, and offer feedback, creating an atmosphere of trust.

Encouraging Flexibility and Adaptability: Organizations can foster a culture of adaptability by offering training, resources, and support to help employees adjust. Providing opportunities for employees to build new skills or take on new challenges can help them feel more confident and capable during times of change. Encouraging a growth mindset, where employees see change as an opportunity for development, can also alleviate stress.

Promoting Work-Life Balance: Change at work can sometimes lead to longer hours or increased responsibilities. Employers should encourage employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible work hours, promoting time off, and discouraging a culture of overwork. Support from leadership in balancing work with personal time can greatly reduce the negative impact of change on mental health.

A resource people can use to help support them is the Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are an excellent resource for employees dealing with the emotional and psychological impact of workplace changes. EAPs typically offer confidential counseling services, stress management resources, and support for mental health concerns. Many EAPs also provide workshops or webinars on coping with workplace transitions, which can help employees navigate change in a healthier way.

Changes in the workplace can cause a variety of mental health challenges for employees. The uncertainty that often accompanies change—whether it's job restructuring, increased workloads, or unclear expectations—can lead to anxiety, stress, and even burnout. When employees are unsure about their roles or the direction of the company, it can create feelings of insecurity and overwhelm. This can lead to decreased motivation, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of engagement with work. Prolonged exposure to stressful change can contribute to more serious mental health issues, including depression and anxiety disorders.
