around 3 minutes/person

Only plastic bottles can be recycled in the blue bins, the rest needs to go to a recycling centre, let's assume a person wanting to make sure their waste is disposed of properly:

Assuming Glasgow to be a square with an Area of 175km², 18 Glaswegian recycling centres being scattered somewhat regularly:

one centre per 9.72 km² -> avg. distance between 2 points on a square (one being the centre, the other - someone's house) = 3.11km:

-> walking there would take on average 37 minutes (avg pace - 5kph)
-> driving - around 5 minutes

Assuming taking out the recycling bin every week, avg household size 2.4 people:
21mins per week per person * 2.4 people = 50.4 minutes of cleaning and sorting per week

considering commute:
between 26 and 58 minutes spend weekly on recycling -> around 21 hours a month per family

Since "time is money":
Assuming avg. work week of 35.7h and avg. weekly wage of £576 (so around £16.13/h) -> time spent on recycling would be equivalent to £677.65 weekly

25% of waste is not recycled due to contamination -> 5.25 hrs of pre-recycling work wasted every month -> equivalent to £12 wasted

not the most reliable analysis - small test group, but still gives us something to think about, allows to draw some conclusions:

shredding the plastics significantly reduces time spent on recycling but raises the initial cost -> consider a built-in shredder (similar to American waste disposals in sinks)

home recycling despite not necessarily saving time, can save hustle (especially if someone wants to make sure their waste is disposed of properly instead of throwing everything into the blue bins)
