         <title>                             Phonemic Awareness</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify the different sounds that make up speech" (Arizona Department of Education, 2017, p.1). <br><br><strong>Reinforced During Reading Instruction:</strong><br>In the school district that I teach in, we use a phonemic awareness curriculum called Heggerty. This is a 15-30 minute, depending on class level ability, phonemic awareness lesson that is done daily with all students in our kindergarten - second-grade in our schools.&nbsp; <br><br><strong>How Reinforcement Supports Writing:</strong><br>From the earliest to your current forms of communication, being able to sound out words is important in both reading and writing. Receiving reinforcement with the sounds that letters make during reading instruction directly correlates to the ability to sound out words when writing.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Phonics helps kids match sounds to letters or letter groups" (Arizona Department of Education, 2017, p.1)<br><br>"Everybody agrees that phonics should be a part of reading instruction" (Johnson, A. 8:40).<br><br><strong>Reinforced During Reading Instruction:</strong><br>New and emerging readers, often need support when sounding out words in a text. Students may need reminding of the letter when reading and need assistance with the sounds that letters or digraphs make. <br><br><strong>How Reinforcement Supports Writing:</strong><br>When learning to read and sound out letters using phonics skills, the skills being learned can be directly related to the students writing. When students are learning to read and write, being able to sound out words and correlate sounds to letters is the basis of both reading and writing.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Fluency</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Fluency is the ability to read accurately and quickly" (Arizona Department of Education, 2017, p.1).<br><br><strong>Reinforced During Reading Instruction:</strong><br>"Fluency practices that can be added into classroom instruction include teachers model fluent reading, students model fluent reading, teacher read-aloud, student read-aloud, review key vocabulary, class or partner poems, and class Readers Theatres. Positive feedback is also beneficial for supporting readers" (Haas &amp; Tussey, p.1). <br><br>In our classroom setting, we use SuperSpeed 100, this is the top 100 high-frequency sight words that you are likely to encounter while reading. Studies have shown that if you can read these 100 words, you will be able to read 50% of the words in a text, which will help for more fluency while reading.<br><br><strong>How Reinforcement Supports Writing:</strong><br>When students learn how to recognize and read the top 100 most high-frequency words used in English text, it will allow them to more easily write the words during written responses. These words can make up 50% of their writing, and having the ability to read the words, it can give them more confidence in writing because they will be able to write the words as well.    </div>]]></description>

         <title>Vocabulary</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Vocabulary is the key to knowing more about everything" (Arizona Department of Education, 2017, p.1). <br><br><strong>Reinforced During Reading Instruction:</strong><br>The curriculum that our district uses has explicit vocabulary for each story. Students are first asked to read each word and talk about prior knowledge. They then use the glossary to look up and write down the definition of the words. After reviewing words again, and using the words in our own sentences we read the stories. During the story, we stop after the paragraph with a vocabulary word and discuss what its purpose is in context.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br><strong>How Reinforcement Supports Writing:</strong><br>When students learn new vocabulary and have a real understanding of the meaning of the words it can lead to a much more in-depth written response. The reinforcement and instruction that we provide also teach students to use tools such as a glossary, dictionary, and thesaurus to help expand their vocabulary as well. When we stop to "investigate" the vocabulary words in context, it can help the students become confident in using the words in their written responses.   </div>]]></description>

         <title>Reading Comprehension</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>"Comprehension happens when the words become ideas" (Arizona Department of Education, 2017, p.1). <br><br>According to Semingson, comprehension is understanding what is read and is one of the main goals of reading (Seminson, P. 5:50).<br><br><strong>Reinforced During Reading Instruction:</strong><br>One way that we reinforce reading comprehension is to investigate background knowledge before we begin to read a lesson. When students have limited background knowledge on a certain topic, it can make comprehension more difficult. When students have little background knowledge on a topic, we may differentiate our learning to research a topic before starting a reading so that they have some knowledge of the topic. <br><br><strong>How Reinforcement Supports Writing:</strong><br>Providing knowledge to a topic now gives the student some type of background knowledge and something to relate to their written response. When students also can comprehend a topic, it means that they fully understand what was read, so they can provide a more in-depth response in their writing.   </div>]]></description>
