An example is when Great Britain wanted the natural resources that Burma had to enrich their country, so they invaded them. An example is when France invaded Burma in 1858 to stop them from invading, but over the next few decades, France took the surrounding territory which included all of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. An example is the Spanish-American war which was an attempt of the U.S. to help Cuba win independence from Spain. The U.S. first became interested the territory in 1860 when the Suez Canal opened and made the Philippines more open for trade with Europe. The Spanish fleet was located in the Philippines at this time and much of it was destroyed in the war.
