Selfish
"You couldn't be on my side that long for nothing, could you... A man needs for a woman to back him up..." (page 32)

This quote shows that Walter is selfish because he's only thinking about himself and not the family. In a way he's thinking about the family because he wants to make money to provide for his family. However, he's not thinking about how they feel emotionally. Walter constantly tries to make his family members feel bad because he doesn't get his way.

Walter is frustrated because he's trying to tell his family about the liquor store that he's trying to buy. Mama and Ruth keep shutting him down so he starts to get a little angry at the situation. Because of this he feels like no one is ever listening to him.

I sympathize with Walter because he comes off as a bad person but he's doing this for his family. He's trying to buy a liquor store to earn money for his family so that they don't have to worry about being in poverty anymore. When trying to discuss this idea with family members he constantly gets ignored or interrupted. He feels like his voice isn't being heard and he's not being acknowledged.

Am I wrong to want it different
Is it selfish
To divulge in things that I know will lead to heartache
To give myself the relief of a friend for a while, even though I know it will hurt them
I know I cannot excuse this behavior
But Is it not for my health
For my well being
No
It only causes pain, again and again
It is not necessary
It is selfish

This poem relates to Walter being selfish because Walter knows that him investing in a liquor store is something that his mother won't like. In the poem it says to give myself the relief of a friend. In Walter's case it's not a friend he is relieving himself from it's his wife. Walter relieves himself of his wife when he's told that she's pregnant. He's just too overwhelmed at the moment and goes to the bar to drink.

The lyrics relate to A Raisin in the Sun because Walter is very stressed. Walter is just trying to help out his family, but he's not going about it in the right way. In the novel he says "I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the living room -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live..." (page 34)

Post 8 - Theme - Fences/A Raisin in the Sun Connection

In the Raisin in the Sun and Fences the themes were very similar. I think that the themes were to value your family because life is too short. In A Raisin in the Sun Walter loses the money that Mama gives him. At first everyone was frustrated with Walter because he was told to put half of the money towards his business and half towards Beneatha's college funds. Turns out he put all of the money towards the store and gave it to his "friend" in which he lost. In the very end when Lindner asked Walter what he wanted to do with the house, he chose to keep it because that's what his family wanted.

In Fences, Troy and Rose were married and they had two children. Troy and Rose had affection towards each other in the beginning of their relationship, but after a while it went away. Troy's mindset towards his children was that he didn't have to love/like them if they were fed and had a roof over their head. He said that it was a man's job to do that for his family. Troy ends up going crazy and dying after getting in a drunken fight with his son Cory.
