Hunger is arguably the worst enemy to the Joad family in the Grapes of Wrath. The threat of hunger and starvation looms constantly over their heads as they travel down Route 66. An empty stomach has the overwhelming ability to make someone want to give up; to surrender. The Joad family has to fight this urge and continue on. They have to silence their cramps and hunger pangs and rationally make do with what they have. The Joad family's food situation is not unfamiliar to many families in our contemporary society, in both urban and rural environments all over the country. In fighting hunger and poverty, those who are more fortunate can donate food, volunteer at food drives like Foodlink, organize canned goods and make the most of the food that we all have to share.

"When a majority of the people are hungry and cold, they will take by force what they need. And the little screaming fact that sounds all through history: repression works only to strengthen and knit the repressed. (Chapter 19, 262).

The movement changed them; the highways, the camps along the road, the fear of hunger and the hunger itself, changed them. The children without dinner changed them, the enless moving changed them. They were migrants. And the hospitality changed them, welded them, united them. (Chapter 21, 311).
