Jean-Paul Gaultier is a prêt-à-porter and haute couture fashion designer from France. He grew up in the suburbs of Paris with his two parents and grandmother, who was the one to introduce him to the world of fashion. He started producing clothes in 1976 under his own self-named brand. In 1993, he even released his own fragrance company, and has one of the best-selling fragrances, "Le male", in the parfum world. Gaultier was well known for his eccentric and creative clothing in haute couture. His brand follows the ideals of inclusivity and embracing femininity and everything that comes with it. This presentation will follow some of his more recent headlining shows, and also how his style has evolved since the beginning of his career.

Although this picture comes from 1979, this was one of Gaultier's first runway productions, showcasing his exploration of patterns (and colors). For the time, these outfits gave Gaultier a very provocative name, but with the perfect tailoring and precision, he was notices by some popular designers like Melka Tréanton from Elle, a notable company.

Le marinière and male representation

In the 1980's, Gaultier started to release clothes that were marinière themed called "Boy Toy". These garments followed styles similar to the clothing that American marines wore, but Gaultier's version was more provocative and sexy. These clothes featured horizontal stripes, navy blue hues, and loose fitting trousers. In the bottom right picture, this pose allowed the male fashion community to have a wider range of representation. In these times, it was a lot more difficult to break fashion norms because of the fear of rejection from not only the fashion community, but designers themselves. These releases provided a huge opportunity to give a statement to higher level fashion designers , like Saint Laurent. Fun fact, when he suggested he wanted to design for homosexuals and use very feminine designs likes skirts and dressers, Saint Laurent walked out on him and didn't sign with him until two years later.

Madonna and Gaultier collab

In the 1990's, Gaultier's rise to fame was aided by none other than Madonna, a huge American fashion icon. Their creativity and "no-limits" mindset allowed Madonna to showcase their elaborate and one of a kind designs. During Madonna's concert tour, she boasted topless designs, cone bra's, and fantasy elements. The mixture of these two's fashion ideology gave the impression of authenticity to their audience because of how well they got along together. A common theme that we can find in almost all of Jean-Paul Gautier's pieces is the rule-breaking element of what society expects from a woman or man. In this era, he focused on the societal standard on how women's breasts should look, but in the light of the cone bra, the standard for female silhouettes.

Spring/Summer collections

In 1995, Gaultier debuted his spring/summer collection that had a much different take of femininity and societal standards. There were more warm tones with gowns, laced gloves, veils, feathered accessories, and blazers. Another one of the elements he wanted to focus on were the popular cabaret dancers from France, which featured sequins and extremely elaborate headpieces, as shown in the pictures above. A lot of his yearly seasonal collections featured some of his own tropes and patterns, but he rearranges and mixes them, which coined the term "Gaultiered" to define this new interpretation.

Jean-Paul Gaultier has had a very powerful and impactful influence on french fashion today. The difficulty of the beginning of his career to his first runway show in the 70's all the way to modern day designs for A-list celebrities clearly define his success. The inclusivity and open-mindedness creates a new standard in the fashion community, and his rule breaking fashion statements allowed for us to dress and feel comfortable in anything we want. It is clear that his influence have changed societal norms and allowed it to become more progressive and accepting as a society as well.
