Kia ora koutou

Injury prevention or arai whara was huge for Maori in days gone by. Developing a strong body and active mind were encouraged through play, instruction and work but all with restrictions around specific activities and locations that sometimes quite simply were dangerous. Tupuna were experts on Health and Safety with RAMS being located in the brains of tohunga (those who were trained to identify nga tohu/signs), managers of an activity and adults all of whom had a collective responsibility to look after the safety of children- the faces of the atua.

For some it is still an essential part of teaching children skills that will help them throughout life. Today specialists such as the fire service and road safety councils employ educators to teach people how to stay safe. These are the modern day equivalents of adults in every papakainga.

Attached are samples of resources. For more on injury prevention (see http://www.acc.co.nz),/ water safety (see wwwwatersafety.org.nz) and fire safety (see getfirewise.org.nz). All the resources are for children, some specifically for ece's. I also have a copy of the old ACC ThinkSafe Education - Early Childhood folder if any one wants to use it.

Also attached is a great piece by Dr Rangimarie Turuki Rose Pere. The article is titled Safety First and Safety Last.

Nga mihi, Joseph Potangaroa
