The protagonist of the film is illustrated as quite different to others within his society. His pale complexion, his dark attire and his wild hair appear rather intimidating and sinister at first, especially when coupled with Edward's potentially deadly hands (which are scissors). Edward himself recognises how he affects others stating that "people are afraid of me because I am different." However, this external facade stands in contrast to Burton's creation of the character's sad and lonely facial expressions and eyes. As such, Edward Scissorhands' character emerges as a unique cross between the genres of horror and romance as well as fantasy and reality. Viewers of the film are left feeling quite sympathetic towards Edward whose differences make him the source of much intrusive interest, accusing allegations and cruel judgements. Esmeralda's hateful statement - "It's not heaven he is from! It's straight from the stinking flames of hell! Besides having both films starring Johnny Depp and being directed by Tim Burton, the films share their  faux-gothic look and feels quite identically. This contrasts to the dark mansion that Edward dwells in his is presented with black, dark and menacing colours with eerie music to demonstrate to the audience the 'evil' associated with Edward.
