These are broken down into 4 types:

Alpha 1 Receptors: These are found on the blood vessels, urinary bladder, eyes, kidneys, and many more.

Alpha 2 Receptors- Found on the nerve terminals.

Beta-1 Receptors- Found present on the heart

Beta-2 Receptors- Found on the smooth muscles of blood vessels, bronchi, sphincter, gastrointestinal tract, urinary bladder, and so much more.

Drug classifications:

Sympathomimetic -Mimic the activity of the sympathetic system. These bind to receptors and activate them. Examples of drugs would be; phenylephrine(Neo-synephrine ®) , formoterol (Foradil ®), albuterol (Proventil®/ Ventolin®) , and terbutaline (Brethine®)

Sympatholytic- These are agonist drugs, meaning they bind to the receptor and inhibit their action therefore decreasing the activity of the sympathetic system. Examples of drugs in this category would be; nadolol (Corgard®) , metoprolol (Lopressor®), ephedrine,

Alternate Names: “ Rest and Digest”; Craniosacral Division (page 60 LO 5.3)
Neurotransmitter:
Acetylcholine: neurotransmitter released at both the ganglia and the postganglionic nerve endings.
Receptors:
Ganglionic receptors- on ganglia
Target receptors- present on target organs and are activated by nor-epinephrine or epinephrine. These are broken down into 3 types:
M1 Receptors- These are found on the heart especially on the SA and AV node
M2 Receptors-Present in the CNS
M3 Receptors- They are present in smooth muscles of blood vessels, bronchi, gastrointestinal tract, bladder, eyes, et.
Drug Classifications:
Cholinergic Drugs- These drugs act by binding to the muscarinic receptors and activating them. This category also includes the drugs that increase the levels of acetylcholine in nerve synapses. These type of drugs include: acetylcholine, pilocarpine ( Pilocar®) , bethanechol (Urecholine®) , and neostigmine ( Prostigmin®)
Anti- Cholinergic Drugs- These drugs will act by blocking muscarinic receptors. They can also decrease the available amount of acetylcholine. These drugs include: atropine and dicyclomine(Bentyl®)
