You have three main ideas

Which means three topic sentences 

 

First of all, you must paraphrase the main idea from the thesis in your topic sentences. You cant copy the exact words from the thesis. If you do that you will get a C on the rubric for the topic sentences element. At least, or minimum, one word for the main idea from the thesis must be paraphrased or changed. 

 

Topic sentences must have three elements: 

a)    An appropriate transition word/phrase-   e.g. Firstly, To begin with, In addition, One of the most important causes/effects/benefits/advantages/ etc. is ……… Another benefit/cause/effect/etc………. 
b)    Topic and focus of the paper ( paraphrase the focus word…causes effects/advantages, etc. don’t repeat the same word many times. For examples, for causes you can use factor/ reason/ etc…. and for effects you can use impacts/ result/ etc.  
c)     Main idea but paraphrased

 

Topic sentences must be complete

Topic sentences cant be a question

Topic sentence must be in one sentence

Topic sentences cant be from a source

 

 

 

 

Example

Thesis: The three main impacts of divorce on children could be on their education, attitude and personality. ( not a great thesis statement because you have to try to write at least two or more words for each main idea. I am only trying to use this one here like an essay example and the topic here is not related to a TP. 

 

Topic sentence 1: Effect on their education

One of the effects of divorce on children can be on their academic performance. ///// Firstly, divorce can affect children’s academic performance. ////// First of all, academic performance of children can be negatively impacted due to divorce. 

 

Topic sentence 2: Effect on their attitude

In addition, divorce can impact children’s mental health. 

 

Topic sentence 3: Effect on their personality 

 

Another serious impact of divorce on children is that it can negatively affect their social outlook.
