I don’t think the only feedback I received was useful at all, but at least I feel like I gave useful ones. I hope that in the future there will be feedbacks that actually will help me develop my art work.
PM: We started planning how we would present our collections. Since mine is made of reflections, I thought that would be insteresting to place the pictures in front of a mirror, so my presentation could be a reflection of my reflection collection. But I realized that is necessary for the public to see first the reflection of the pictures, then the actual pictures so I had to choose a place where the photos would be hidden. Displaying them on the wall, I wasn’t really sure if it would be better to change them for one bigger mirror. Maria Clara said to me that she preferred a lot of little mirrors, because of the effect they created, make it different from just seeing all of the collection at once in one mirror, and I ended up agreeing with her. The experience of seeing just a few parts of the collection at a time would make it unique, because the reflections would be, just like the ones in the collection, shaped by the mirrors. It will transmit the fact that the objects and situations, when reflected, are hardly ever entirely shown in the mirrors. Now I have to figure it out how I’m going to display the mirrors on the wall, if that’s gonna be a pattern or something like that.

To make my drawings today I followed Solange’s suggestion to draw not only my collection, but also pictures that fit the theme I choose. For the first two drawings, I decided to take one mirror and place it somewhere in the studio. My goal was to, using different materials, represent the situation making it clear that part of the drawing was a reflection, and other part was just the area around the mirror.

then added some white paint, because of the absence of other colors in the reflection. I had some difficulty finding more shades of grey while diluting the ink, especially because of the paper color, and since I was using a lot of ink mixed with water, sometimes I had to wait a little for the paper to dry. But I think this was userful, because it gave me time observe more carefully every element that was going to compose the picture.

Since I couldn’t distinguish objects from the pictures (because they looked too far away), most of the drawing was made based just on the colors that composed each photo. I had never done this before and honestly didn’t expected such a nice result. What impressed me the most about this one it’s how similar to reality the drawing can look when seen from afar, even tho is mostly a bunch of colorful blurs. At first I tried another forms of representation by rearranging the pictures on the column. Since we had to experiment more ways to present our collection, I thought I would be easier to replace the pictures than the mirrors. The ideias that came up were nice but they ended up being pretty similar.

Then Michael said to me that it could be better if I took the mirrors somewhere else in the studio, and I agreed with him. When I tried to remove the first mirror, part of it broke, but I liked the new shapes that appeared and decided to keep using this broken pieces.

Since my presentation wasn’t attached to rectangular mirror anymore, I decided to follow Carlos’s suggestion and began to think about other objects that also reflect, so I could bring them along with the mirrors to have a variety of reflections. This choice made the collection expand to not only photos of reflection, but also objects that reflect.

For the last part, when we went downstairs to rearrange our representation, I putted the mirrors together on the floor but supported by the wall, and the pictures on the ceiling. I did this because when people walked next to the mirror they would realize that the photos were above them. It was really difficult to place the pictures somewhere people could see through the mirror while walking, but when finished I think it was totally worth it.

The first one only allowed you to do one print of each image, but ,despite of that, it was the technique I liked the most, because this limitation made experiment more different imagines till I got to a result I actually liked and thought could be part of my collection. The second technique tho didn’t give me a good result today. It was kinda hard to think about only one thing I could do that was related to my collection, because since is harder to create a picture to reproduce with drypoint, I didn’t have much time to experiment like I did with monotype. The result also ended up being too bright. I liked the technique itself and would like to try it again someday, but I wish I could have had more time to at least correct my mistakes from the first try.

Charles Watson’s lecture was also really inspiring, because it remembered me the importance of practice and commitment for cognition and the development of creative thinking.

During the life drawing class I could notice my tendency to represent mostly closeups of the model’s body. It’s something that really helps me to evolve my experience with details even from a certain distende and to create a nice composition in the paper. Today I only used charcoal, because I was looking for thicker and faster lines, but I intend to experiment more material during the next classes.

I also tried to find letters in objects of different sizes, because we usually don’t notice the shapes formed by things that are either too big or too small. And I took care when cropping and rotating the images so they would actually look like the things I noticed when registered them. I think if I had more time to dedicate to this task, the result would’ve been better, but I liked the letters that could be found during the time that was given to us, and it’s not like it have to end today. I actually started noticing more shapes that look like letter on my way home and think this could become a nice and inspiring typography collection.

I cut out lines in different sizes so I could delimitate two areas, each one with one shade of shadow (image).
Since it came out really delicate, it was hard sometimes to get precise results with the techniques we did today. But since I did a lot of copys and experimented ways to print the letters, some fine results appeared. Actually, since is a type that conteins perspective and curved surfaces, it took me a lot of time, but it was definitively worth it, because I enjoyed the final result. After lunch we had to think about how we would make our 3D letters. Pedro suggested me to use LEGO, and I liked the ideia but is a really expensive material, and it would be too easy to make. So I started looking for materials that had a connection with light (from the light switch) and could be used as a kind of puzzle. I ended up choosing acetate, because it’s resistente and light can go through it, so Marcelo from the Printing Room gave me 3 acetate sheets of 98cmX60cm. After cutting out the shapes and folding them, I had some problem because the sheets Marcelo gave were curved, so I had to find a way of connecting the parts and keep the objects rigid. Since I couldn’t hide the tapes, I decided to call attention to them and use tapes with primary colors to close the pieces. In the other hand, I didn’t find the after lunch activities very helpful, because it seemed like everyone had to register their thinking process in the same way, when we know that’s not like things happen. I already knew what my project was going to be about, so the rest of the class passed really slow, as I felt like I had to do something just because I was being told to. It was kinda difficult for me doing the world maps because I prefer to connect sentences than use isolated words, and I think we spent more time then necessary doing this. The intentions with this project weren’t really clear and I know that isn’t a formula for making protest posters, but that list of words that as given actually limiteted us a little bit. I can see what the tutors were trying to do, but it doesn’t work with everybody, and it was kind of a wast of time for those who don’t fit this way of thinking. Something that bothered me last week was that we took too long to actually start working on our 3D letters, and I’m afraid this is going to happen again in the next projects, because what we did today could have been done in a shorter period of time. Since I had to make a type related to my protest theme, I drew the letters in a cardboard, putted duble-sided tape in it and used white thread to measure how much I needed to make my type. Then I dyed it with red paint, and made “why so” and “?” with white and “different” with red and white thread. Since my protest is about the hypocrisy when treating “edible” animals and animals that are considered pets, the contrast between this two pictures seamed right for the project. For the printing I tried to cut lines to make only the animals silhouette, and I really liked the results. I drew a cat, a dog, a chicken, an ox and a pig, and made stencils with the animal’s face. Then I made ten posters with two animals each, variating between cat and dog, and chicken, ox and pig, and used black and red spray paint. In all of the posters I wrote “Why so different?” with posca, and tried to standardize the letters by transferring the main lettering from my sketchbook. I disposed them in places like the studios, the stairs, the hallways and the facade of EBAC to reach a bigger amount of people. My protest posters show 2 animals, one that is considered a pet (a dog or a cat) and one that is considered edible (an ox, a chicken or a pig). I intended to make people reflect about how these animals are treated so differently by using the phrase “why so different?”. I liked the result and my peers also seemed to do so. Some of them even told me that the animals appeared to be angry, and that’s something I didn’t notice before, but ended up matching the posters, because this animals should be angry when you think about the posters theme. I thought I wouldn’t like the result of this project for many reasons, such as the fact that I don’t really like confront, and that’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about protests. We did some group activities analyzing good and bad exemples and answering questions to actually learn how to make a good research, and it was really helpful because I didn’t have any exemple of research file to use as an reference before today. I realized that I wasn’t doing my research file right, because most of the ones I posted on Padlet where just links to texts or videos I saw, and the tutors couldn’t actually see what was my interpretation of those things and how they influenced me during the project. After this workshop I realized how research file is more like my reflective journal of other people’s work than a place to just pin works I saw. That’s was also the Reflective Journal workshop after lunch, and I noticed that I already do some reasonably good reflectives, because I was very worried since the beginning if I was being clear about what was my process during each day, and if I was already answering any question that could come up to mind while reading it. At first I did some sketches of the ways I could connect the filters to the camera, like using my hair tie or the pare-soleil to fix the foil ones to the lens. Then I started experimenting the materials I selected at home to make filters (like transparent bags, golden foil, ruby filter), and documented the effect each material caused in the photos to separate the ones I liked from the not so useful ones. The process took some time because, as I couldn’t print the results of the different photos at the moment, I wrote down all the modifications each filter caused on the images, and this helped me identify which photo was from each filter afterwards. For each photo I tried to use the technique in a way it could match the image’s theme, so I wouldn’t be doing it just because I had to. The first photo is a black and white photo from a living room during Christmas (there’s a little Christmas tree on a table), but since I didn’t notice it at first because of the size of the tree, my ideia was to call attention to it by adding some colors and I think it work well, especially because I didn’t put color in everything, so I could direct the attention to certain spots. The second image was of a little girl alone in the street with a suspicious shadow in front of her, and the first question that came to my mind was “where are her parents?”, so I tried to put them in the picture by subtracting their images. For this I drew two silhouettes by her size and cut them off, and with the holes and the shadow the image became really dark, because the subject changed with the made up parent figured, the views are more worried with what could happen to the little girl now that her parents are gone. The third photo is from somewhere that looks like a park or a forest and, since I had to stitch something, I stitched another smaller photo of a country house to the place. From the first time I saw the two photos I thought they would look nice together, because both have a small hill that makes them look like the same place but in different times, it reminded me of a book called “Here” by Richard McGuire. The fourth one is a portrait of child, and it was already folded so I decided to pierce it with my paper scalpel, using the relief of her face as a guide. I pierced the mouth, the eyes and the dimples for this process because they were the deeper parts of her face. For the last photo I decided to do the subtracting and binding techniques together, so I choose a photo of a pilot on a plane. I removed the outside of the plane so when someone sees the photo, the person can imagine if the plane is flying or on the ground. And I reinforced the lines of the photo by sewing over them using different colors for the clothes and the head and face. I developed a really useful device creating a kind of transparent cover for my pare-soleil and it gave a role new world of opportunities because I could put a lot of different objects and filters inside of the pare-soleil and play with focus, colors and textures, like from ropes, sponges and scratched acetates. During class we had to create 3D objects out of 2D photos so I took one picture of the surface of a golden pineapple I had and folded the paper in a way the object’s relief was also in the paper. I also used a photo of a building to recreate it, and for that I folded a lot of vertical lines created by the windows in the building’s facade. In my opinion is nice to watch them, especially when we, students, aren’t the only public, because I think when is an open lecture we end up getting more informations in different areas at once, and people from outside bring questions that could add to our knowledge, like what happened at Dado. I think it would be nice to attend not only to more of those, but also to lectures with professionals that work in different areas from the courses at EBAC. The lecture with Kevin really helped me to consider Motion Graphics as the path I’ll choose, at least during foundation, because it cleared my mind about what each professional is responsible for and gave me a range of possibilities to learn more about. Bringing Split Studio and Rafael Coutinho was also crucial in my opinion, because I used to imagine the Motion Graphics path as something more focused in 3D, and watching a 2D animation studio talking about the scenario for this type of animation in Brazil motivated me to decide that’s what I want to do, since I’ve always wanted to do 2D. For the zine I was having the idea of doing some handmade famous movie titles typography in other movie posters. Although I think it’s useful to do this kind of activity to generate more ideas, in my opinion it was a waste using 15 A4 sheets of paper for each person, because not everyone needs this amount of space to register ideas. From the 30 ideas, 3 for publications caught my attention and I tried developing them on my sketchbook by not only explaining the main idea, but also drawing some exemples of what the pages of the self publish could be. I decided to choose the “Final Girls Case Files” idea and put the other two aside to do them after as personal side projects, because it seamed like the one I would like doing the most right now, since this characters in horror movies are something I’m really interested about. In the afternoon, during Jaygo’s lecture, I noticed that he focused a lot more in Graphic Design than Illustration when talking about his BA course, and that’s something that demotivated me to consider this path, because I was thinking to apply to illustration if I went to this side. As for the Critique of inicial ideas in the second part of class, I liked the activity, because we have an initial feedback from our tutors and peers about the ideas we are trying to develop. I also searched fo the typography I wanted to use on the case files to make them look more realistic, and tried to find fictional exemples that didn’t seam too fake. Then I ironed all the sheets of paper so they wouldn’t look so kneaded. It was a really difficult process, because I could only do one sheet at a time, but I liked how they only got a little darker. I also had time to buy thick sheets of kraft paper for the case file folders, and started developing the design of the folders, measuring the size of the tabs and where to fold them, so the sheets of paper stay safe inside the folders. To have more outcomes, I decided to go to the printing room and print a black T-shirt with “Final Girl” written in red. To do that I took a parchment paper and used ink to make the mask for the T-shirt, so I could print two, a small unisex one and a small babylook. Then I presented my project do Fan and explained the whole process to him, so we could give feedback to each other work. The feedback was well constructed and mainly positive, he understood the narrative I tried to create and liked how my research resulted on a well executed publication. He only pointed out some small things I could improve, like the print I did on the T-shirt, because it was last think I tried to add to my project, so I didn’t have enough knowledge about how the regular fabric paint in the printing room would look on black fabric, and he also said I should have done more volumes, something I agree, but didn’t manage to because of the food poisoning I had on the weekend, that interfered in the number of papers I was able to give an aged look and ,consequently, in the number ok pages I ended up printing.
