One reason the radio became popular was the advertisements for it. These appealed to different groups of people and convinced them to purchase a radio. Listening to the radio was a popular afternoon family activity in which families would listen to music, news, or other broadcasts. Radio eventually became a way of communication between people and is still used today.

Other than broadcasting music and other programs, the radio also formed another type of advertisement. Commercials range from food, to clothes, and from job openings, to new technology. By the 1930's 12 million households had at least one radio. Original radios were crystal radios, but then as radios became more 'developed' more people bought vacuum radios. Radios helped to break down provincialism, or the narrow-mindedness of Americans. The radio opened up opportunities for new methods of communication, new styles of music, and new mass culture.

Advertisement helped to make people aware of radios and convince them to purchase radios. Improvements of technology allowed the radio to become smaller and higher quality. As they became more popular the price dropped significantly and more Americans could afford them. In 1920 a radio would cost $75 and $47 thirteen years later.
