The site contains visually rich information, while also introducing the technical term for the human body. Students can focus on particular body systems and interact with areas of the body in a 3D format. This site gives a really good inside look at the human body to give opportunity for the most comprehension.

This site also works well with the big idea of body systems. Exploring questions, such as:
1. How are internal body systems necessary for survival? and...
2.  What do your body systems require for survival? 
Both can be investigated as students explore this site. With its interactive and detailed format, scientifically accurate information, and easy to navigate layout, this will give students at all levels the opportunity to engage and comprehend. With the 3D aspect, it has great visual appeal, and the ability to focus on specific body systems. The students can manipulate and rotate the body for full body experience! While this site has an abundance of information, the ability to narrow your search to specific systems does not make it an overwhelming adventure. The students will be introduced to technical terms and realistic images that accompany the text. Peers could explore this site together, and the information included could support class discussions.

My past teaching partner, Mrs. Calder, was previously an Aerospace Engineer, before moving into the teaching profession. She was invited to Huntsville, Alabama, for a week-long Space Academy for Educators. Mrs. Calder was selected along with four other Canadian teachers to be part of the space program. She will be invited, as an expert, to speak to the class and share her experience and knowledge about space and science. As Mrs. Calder works at a different school (but only 4 days a week), we would invite her as an in person guest. If we are in a distance learning situation, we would invite her to join via Zoom or Google Meets, to engage with the class.

As this is a unique opportunity for students to converse, ask questions, and gain some credible knowledge on their topic, this may be done at the start of the inquiry to spark curiosity and engagement. Teachers that attend the Space Academy, have access to lessons, activities, and websites directly from the space academy to share with teachers. Content is geared towards students in grades 4-9, which is perfect for our students.  Mrs. Calder experienced simulated space missions and can now teach based on real world problems she learned about in regards to motion and space. This creates the feeling of authenticity, and should create engagement and enthusiasm. As a guest/expert, and also a teacher, Mrs. Calder will understand how to interact with students, and ensure inclusion of students of various learning abilities and styles. Students that connect with her, will have a resource they can contact and continue their learning!

It has a presentation from Wilfred Buck, also known as the Star Guy, a Cree constellation expert.  

While this resource is from Manitoba, not BC, it explores the night sky from a First Nation’s perspective and has a section for astronomy.  Wilfred Buck can be quoted as saying, “every culture in the Northern Hemisphere saw the same sky at night, and they all had their own constellations, mythologies and teachings.”  

We are encouraged to find resources that connect to the lessons our Aboriginal Education teachers share with our students.  However, as we do not have any local authors in this topic area, we must look for other resources. This Manitoba resource comes from an authentic perspective and has information on the topic of astronomy, fitting well with Grade 6 big Ideas related to the solar system and galaxies. While I see this resource being used independently, I could also see the site drawing on perspective and leading to class discussions and comparisons of various cultures and beliefs.

NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has a mission to explore flight research, space and aeronautics. Created for student use, this website has everything from podcasts, e-books, blogs, videos, news, images, and a NASA Education Youtube channel. The site has a link with an alphabetized list of websites A-Z about a wide range of topics. Information is separated based on specific grade recommendations and has links for educators, a Kids’ Club, and resources complete with lessons plans and teaching materials.

This site gives free access to a wealth of information and accommodates varied learning styles and has a variety of ways to acquire information. Students may listen or read through information, or watch videos, which addresses students of of all learning abilities, interests, and skill level. Although NASA's site has information from a USA perspective, it is relevant and includes up to date information on space. The facts are clear, up to date, and has a well organized homepage, authentic pictures, workable links, creating an authentic and engaging experience that is visually appealing for students. All four of the big ideas for grade 6 science are covered, with a specific focus on space, galaxies, and Newton’s three laws of motion. This site is ideal for students to explore and support them as they create their inquiry questions. With the wide range of information on this site, students could explore individually, but teachers may also use the videos and podcasts for whole class instruction.

I have found these resources are underused and not well advertised with our teachers. Each of the resources have been vetted, and contain authentic, current information that can be accessed  from home or school. EBSCO host has journals, magazines, books and videos on a wide variety of quality research topics. World Book Student is an up to date online encyclopedia with videos, images, and facts at an appropriate level for student in grade 6/7. This site also has links to other encyclopedia articles, as well as books, maps, special reports, websites, and magazines articles. World Book Science Power engages students with interactive science learning that is easy to navigate for students at all levels.  

EBSCO host allows a student to narrow their searches and find valuable, credible information.  Students will have access to current articles and information that is relevant and accurate. EBSCO host also supports the student in finding age appropriate information. While the articles come in full text, they also have an audio option for struggling readers. This will also help engage reluctant readers. Students have options to easily cite their sources, a key component in the inquiry process.

World Book Student is a resource that I have used many times with my students. It is well organized and has options (World Book Kids) for students that find the information difficult to read. The simplified version also has an audio option. Conversely, students ready for deeper learning opportunities,  could use World Book Advanced. This resource allows a student to save their research as they go, and  offers articles, images, research, videos, audio, maps, and suggestions for related information. Citing information from this source is also done simply. This resource shares a vast amount of information that matches well with the curriculum.   World Book also has a list of websites with prepared lessons plans and activities for teachers.  This resource could be used independently, with small groups, and to support whole class instruction.

Science Power's interactive and visually appealing layout is ideal for this age group. Students can also access an audio version, again making this resource good for a wide range of learning abilities.

World Book Science has an interesting option to download lessons as podcasts, including topics such as "how to overcome gravity to get to space," which fits in well with the IBL project!

We were informed in June, that all libraries in our district will be outfitted with VR equipment in the fall, as part of our district plan to support LLC creation. The HR Macmillan Space Centre is an astronomy museum located in Vancouver, BC. They offer virtual field trips to engage in learning about how astronauts live and work, the differences found on Earth versus space in relation to Newton’s laws, and the challenges of extreme environments. This can be accessed live with a 45 minute Skype session at a cost of $150.00. This would be well worth using class or library funds, to bring an authentic experience to the students in our own environment! During Covid-19, in person learning has been closed to visitors, but they are still accessible for virtual learning. 

I personally can't wait to have virtual field trips as a way to engage and inspire students on their topic of interest! This a great opportunity for individual students to ask specific questions and get excited about their learning. Virtual field trips offer real world experiences with experts, making the learning meaningful. This is a great resource for students of any age and learning ability. While this might be a good intro lesson, this would also work well once the students have started their inquiry project, so they can use background knowledge to generate and ask more in depth questions.  Students can then reflect and share what their learning with classmates and make further connections to their inquiry projects.

Students can use research databases, images, activities, newsreels, worksheets, and audio files. All materials are accessible from home or school through a district subscription. The information available is relevant, reliable, and comes from an authentic educational resource.  

The resource, provided by the school district, has a wealth of information that connects to the   big ideas being explored in science. This would work well during distance learning, as learners of varying abilities and backgrounds will have access and success (including those we supply computers due to lack of technology at home). For struggling or reluctant readers, information can be gained from quality videos with Learn360. Navigation and searching for specific topics is fairly straightforward and can be done by subject, keyword, media type, grade level, among other options. The material on this site is approved by the district and is current, relevant, visually appealing, suitable for the age, and very easily accessible. This resource could be used for whole class instruction, individually, or in small groups as part of their research. The site works well to enhance student learning as they can find up to date content to address the inquiry question of their choosing.

Many of our resources on space are dated, so we do not have a lot of choice in this area. This was recognized during a recent weeding, as an area of focus for our LLC. Star Talk is written by Neil deGrasse Tyson, a current science communicator and astrophysicist. Tyson also produces a podcast and TV show on the National Geographic Channel. An online search will take you to a collection of videos on a wide range of topics in space and science. This particular book discusses issues affecting planets, biodiversity loss, as well as climate change.  There are lots of vivid images, and the book is filled with facts and learning that would be appropriate for our students in the intermediate grades. 

As previously mentioned, I selected this resource as it is current and relevant to the IBL opportunity I will be exploring. I also appreciate this is a fairly straightforward and simple read, full of facts and ideas that may help generate an inquiry question. This book will be appealing to students, there are lots of captivating photos and images that make the visual design interesting and have added captions for the reader. Being both fun and informative, this book is at an appropriate level for most students at this grade level. However, there is also the website which is recommended by the ERAC Resource Collection. National Geographic kids online has facts, videos, and images about space, presented in a visually appealing format, with a target age of 6-14.  These sites contain an abundance of information at a higher level, which will challenge some students, while also offering information for a varying level of readers. Here you can find relevant and accurate facts, photos, news, and videos that students can use as part of their inquiry search.  

  This is a great resource to include as it has a lot of information about Mars (connects to our novel) and the Solar System that fit with the curriculum. There are many high quality, authentic photos of planets and missions, that students can download, cite and use as part of their inquiry. Both sites, for young and older students, are navigated easily, but the Kids version is more colourful and straightforward, and full of pictures for easy exploration.
This is a trusted source, known for using experts, photographers, and journalists to include quality information. The amazing  photography will be an appealing aspect for the students, as will the exciting videos that bring the outside world to them. This site will work for various groups of students depending on their topic, either independently or in groups. Class discussion could be generated, using topics such as Extreme Weather on Earth and Other Planets or Environmental Conditions in our Solar System.

There is a wide range of knowledge, touching on many topics of astronomy and space science. It is educational, engaging, and students can navigate their way through the site easily. A majority of the videos are between 3-8 minutes long, a good length to keep attention. I was originally drawn to the 3-part series  on the "Fundamentals of space-time," but quickly realized there was a lot more to explore. The videos will hopefully support students as they create their inquiry questions and allow them to learn form experts from all over the world. 

This resource is current and would often be updated with new video lessons. This makes the site ideal for inquiry and a great resource for distance learning. This site can be used with a wide range of ages and abilities, and has a lot of information allowing for students to push deep into their inquiry project. There is information specific to the environment on Mars, as well as gravity and Newton's Law's (with a separate search). As a distance learning resource, students can connect to a wide range of topics as part of their learning, while they explore options for their research. This could, again, be used for students to explore independently, as a group or as part of whole class instruction.
