The other day they called and I was speaking to my grandpa. When I asked him how is the state of Iraq at the moment, he said that they live their life in fear due to the unpredictability of being bombed or raided. He explained how they are stuck. They've been trying to immigrate to the U.S for a very long time. During the conversation I used the quote. Below will be a dialogue of our conversation (this conversation happened in Arabic but I will provide it in English):

Me: Grandpa how is Iraq at the moment, is everything OK where you are?
Grandpa: Honey, Iraq hasn't been safe for decades. We live our lives everyday in fear that ISIS will claim our house or that we will get bombed. Your grandmother and aunt are terrified to go out and get stoned or assaulted for not wearing a hijab.
Me: (in English) "Poor country! Almost afraid to know itself. It cannot Be called our mother, but our grave."
Grandpa: What??  What does that mean?
Me: (back to Arabic) Oh, I was saying how our country has become so ruined that we cannot recognize it anymore. Living there is so dangerous that it serves as a model for a grave.
Grandpa: Yes, if we do not leave, this is where we will die an unnatural death. I'm so happy that your dad took you away from all the destruction. Iraq used to be a beautiful place, but now it is surrounded by chaos. This is not the country I once called my own.
Me: I am so sorry to hear that. I will continue praying everyday that you and Grandma will make it to me.

We often get into debates since I am hardcore democrat. Recently we were arguing over the mass shooting that occurred in Vegas. This is the dialogue of our argument:

James: The shooter in Las Vegas purchased all these guns legally and the only thing that would've been able to stop him is a complete gun ban.
Me: But why should it even be legally allowed to purchase guns such as rifles. These hundreds of people would not have needed to die for going out and trying to enjoy a nice night out. James: OK you went a little poetic there calm down. America is still 10 times better and safer than many other countries. If you stayed in the middle east you would have been in the grave but not here.
Me: True, but it does not mean it does not have flaws that we need to fix before more people get hurt. Plus, you don't know that. Anyone can come into the classroom now and shoot everyone in here. No one is safe.

The protesters are "accusing President Nicolas Maduro of moving towards a dictatorship, and want him to resign (Al-Jazeera. com)." Venezuela is also facing huge economic problems: "In January 2017, according to estimates by the Finance and Economic Development Commission of the National Assembly (AN), it was predicted that inflation will close this year at 679.73 percent (Al-Jazeera. com)." The economic crisis is not only leaving 80% of its citizens in poverty, it is causing great harm to the public health system: "In the country's public hospitals, medicine and equipment are increasingly not available (Al-Jazeera. com)."

This relates to the quote because it is a modern day example of the devastating effects of dictatorship and a country under a corrupt leader. Nicolas Maduro's dictatorship relates to Macbeth's tyranny as both brought havoc to their country and the people in it. Their dictatorship has caused their countries to be the "grave" of its citizens since they bring destruction, murder, and unjust rulings that effect the people heavily on many aspects.

It was calculated that "at least 58 people were killed and more than 500 were hurt (CNN. com)." Some of the people there were interviewed and said that, "The gunshots lasted for 10 to 15 minutes. It didn't stop (CNN. com)." After authorities searched the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where he shot from, they found 23 weapons.

This relates to the quote because it reflects on the inability of Congress to make America a safe enough place where people can truly call it their "mother" and not their "grave." These many mass shootings that have been happening lately connect to the quote because many people are starting to feel unsafe in their motherland as many bodies are being buried. The inability of Congress to act upon this violence is an example of bad leadership that the country gets punished for. Macbeth's bad leadership skills and corruption lead his country into havoc and murder. The ineffectiveness of Congress and Macbeth's tyranny articulate a correlation between the actions of leaders to the state of the country.

The hostility and fighting led to, "around 350,000 civilians in the province [to be] forced to run away from their homes (BBC)." These events spiraled after a protest when the government tortured 15 school children for writing anti-government graffiti. What started as a peaceful protest, led to many people dying in the process under the hands of President Bashar al-Assad. It is evident that, "millions of people both inside and outside Syria are in desperate need of help, but aid agencies say that getting help to people inside the country is very difficult and dangerous (BBC)." Many people are trying to leave to escape the hostility in their country.

This relates to the quote because Syria has become a grave to the people that are living there due to the violence that they cannot seem to control. They cannot even peacefully protest without getting shot at. This relates to Scotland under the power of Macbeth because no one is really safe because Macbeth has proven that he will kill anything that stops in his tracks. Through the dialogue of other characters, Scotland was described as a country under a madman where the people in it are paying the price of his corruption. This relates to the events in Syria because they are under a corrupt leader that stops anyone that defies his rule and his government making Syria a "grave" just like Scotland under Macbeth.

She starts the song by singing "Murder lives forever and so does war." This describes the state of the country of Scotland under the corrupt rule of Macbeth. Marina describes human behavior as unpredictable and she questions whether we are born evil when she sings, "Is it running in our blood, is it running in our veins? Is it running in our genes, is it in our DNA?" This associates with the immoral characteristics of Macbeth and the evilness that is flowing in his veins. The lyrics help question whether it was Macbeth's own internal decision or was it the influence of outside sources that allowed him to become so engulfed in power that he becomes a madman that put his country in despair and tyranny.  Humans can be catastrophic with their actions and Marina even described them as worse than animals when she sings, "We live, we die, we steal, we kill, we lie, just like animals, but with far less grace. We laugh, we cry, like babies in the night. Forever running wild in the human race." This analogy to how animals kill relate to how Macbeth uses animals as metaphors as well such as the raven or the owl. The killings and malfeasance increased when Macbeth became king that his country was compared to a grave and the song helps to describe the savagery nature that Macbeth has portrayed as a king. Marina also delineates, "All the hate coming out from a generation who got everything, and nothing guided by temptation." This correlates to the quote because it describes how Macbeth's temptation lead many people to suffer and how he created a hostile place for his subjects to live that they cannot even call it their home or mother land.

I also take this quote personally because I came out of a country I once called my mother so it may not become my grave.  This quote has further proven that actions not only affect you as a person but also the people that surround you.
