Politics, Power and Justice by Hernandez, Gramisha

Students might focus on the ways in which texts explore aspects of rights and responsibilities, the workings and structures of governments and institutions. They might also investigate hierarchies of power, the distribution of wealth and resources, the limits of justice and the law, equality and inequality, human rights and peace and conflict.

Myop experiences injustice towards the black community both visibly and invisibly, that no child, let alone person should ever have to face. The environment that she lives in, a small sharecropping cabin, is not ideal for any type of family. But her innocence consumes her, and as a five-year-old, Myop would not recognize that corruption and discrimination deeply rooted in the government system towards her race. She lives in a cloud of obliviousness, living the best life that any child in her impoverished situation could have. It is noted that when she steps in the black man’s face, she pulls out her foot with no fear and only recognizes she has stepped on someone when she sees his smile. This represents how black people are constantly dehumanized and forgotten in a system that remains silent on the issues of racism. The corpse of the man was left isolated, so not only is the ignored, but also covered up. In Nyop’s the description of the “frayed, rotted, bleached, and frazzled” noose hanging from the tree, the comparison can be made to the outdated, corrupt, and worn government in place of what should be an institution with fair judgement and treatment towards all. All the injustice Nyop faces in her life, both openly and discreetly, are a result of the neglect of the government towards African Americans.

As corrupt as the government’s systems are currently, Alice Walker’s work: “The Flowers” can correlate to the global issues of Politics, Power, and Justice. Furthermore, there is evidence within the text to provide support my claim in relevance of these global issues. For instance, according to the text, the phrases, “frayed, rotted, bleached, and frazzled” can refer to the government’s connivance of the injustices towards the Black Community.

The corpse represents all the victims of systematic racism and the girl represents all the black children who are oblivious to such racial discrimination. When she comes in contact with the corpse, her blissful ignorance is gone. The noose represents the justice system as it is torn and decomposed.

The fact that she is poor may just be a product of systemic racism because for every « $100 » white families earn, black families earn just « $53.30 ». https://www.benjerry.com/whats-new/2016/systemic-racism-is-real?utm_medium=paidsearch&utm_source=google&utm_name=bj_alwayson_brand2019_traffic&utm_term=&utm_content=serp&utm_topic=flavors&utm_objective=discover&utm_root=d&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4f35BRDBARIsAPePBHwFnfvKJyHhxjrulUvn87ZNOBHhcvHugFedwQDvTP2WzzFEcJ9O-78aAuc_EALw_wcB

The little girl is black and lives in a country where they have tormented and abused African Americans for centuries however, without knowing this information she lives without fear of being subjected to racism. In fact, she is just prancing around, picking flowers. Then « smack » she steps on some guys face and doesn’t even realize he is a human because his killers dehumanized him as they’ve done and continue to do to African Americans.

In the passage the girl feels happy and the author expresses her surroundings as « warm » and « beautiful ». The mood changes when she sees the corpse and the mood words change to « damp » and « not as pleasant » but after all that she finds “peacefulness” in mourning the lost soul.
