After meeting at the Biltmore Hotel, Sally and Holden take a cab to the Radio City Music Hall where they watch a play together. Holden rants about how he believes the musicians and actors are full of themselves, since they are great at their job. This whole experience effects Holden as he is practically on his own, expect for Sally. I think it allows for Holden to grow and mature, even if it is just a little bit subconsciously.

At the beginning of Chapter 17, Holden sits in the lobby of the Biltmore hotel, waiting for Sally's arrival. When she does arrive and Holden sees her, he believes she looks amazing. "I didn't even like her that much, and yet all of the sudden I felt like I was in love with her and wanted to marry her." (138) So after one glance at Sally, he went from having almost no feelings for her, to wanting to spend the rest of his life with her.

After their play, Holden and Sally take the nearby trip to the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink. Holden and Sally continue to bond although he makes strange comments about her butt, and the short skirt she is wearing. After skating for a bit, they take a break and sit down inside. Holden begins to confide in Sally and explain to her all of the phony people back in his old school and New York. He begins to kind of spiral and tell her how they should just run away together and escape society to live in a cabin in the woods. This affects Holden's character because he realizes he spirals out and is worried he is going to become more alienated.

After skating, Sally and Holden enter a bar where they could get drinks and chat. They start talking about how school is a bore, and then Holden kind of loses his mind. He strikes up a proposition to her in which they leave the city together, stay in cabin camps, and get married. He becomes almost aggressive towards her when expressing this idea and Sally was not liking any of it. He eventually calls Sally a royal pain in the ass, and then she left him. She says "If you think I'd let you take me home, your mad. No boy ever said that to me in my entire life.

After the mental collapse and explosion on Sally, Holden leaves without her. He seems sort of unbothered by the events that occured. This scene and the past one allow the reader to get a deeper look into Holden's character and allows for Holden's mental collapse to continue in the future of the novel. However, in the moment, Holden simply wanted a swiss cheese sandwich and though about the possibility of giving Jane another call. He then recalls this 'terrible' guy who she was dating at the time and becomes sort of envious.

During Holden's walk to the Wicker Bar, he begins to reminisce about old conversations with D.B. and Allie. He speaks and thinks about his older brothers time in the Army and how he landed on the the beaches of D-day. This does add development to Holden's character because it allows for the readers to understand more into Holden's family life and why he may act how he does. It also brings up a sad moment as he remembers and wishes his younger brother Allie was still here.
