Jan 21, 2019. <a href="https://www.livescience.com/43151-quaternary-period.html">https://www.livescience.com/43151-quaternary-period.html</a> <br>I used this website to find information about the climate and basic facts during the Quaternary time period. <br>It was very well structured and easy to find the relevant information based on just the title, the same title of my assignment. Though, it included very difficult vocabulary which means it wasn't fitted for my age. <br>The site is made for informing, there is no reason of entertainment or earning money which increases the reliability. The company is also made to give out information about science and history. It's no private person who made it just for fun. The author is employed by the company and educates people for a living, just like a teacher. She is educated herself and I can therefore trust what she writes is true. <br>The information is also written from a very objective perspective, meaning it's not biased or subjective. This also makes it more trustworthy because the author keeps the information the way it was, not the way they think it was. <br>A disadvantage is that it was published 2014. The time difference is five years from today and a lot of discoveries and researches could have happened over this time meaning some information included in the website could have changed and become false. Though, most of the information I used for my essay was about the climate from 2 million years ago and therefore I don't think the 5 year difference have affected the facts that much and I can still say that the information is relevant for my assignment. <br>As a summary I would say this website is trustworthy enough to use as a source of information and very relevant for my work.<br><br>Belknap, Daniel F. It just never ends! I only read the first paragraphs about the climate because it is very well structures with titles on each paragraph so you directly found relevant information. Just like the last source it was difficult vocabulary with science terms, not suited for my age. This made it harder to know what they meant but because I had more than one source I could compare and found the same fact on each just in different formulations. <br>The site include other articles about science and evolution so I figured the purpose of this page is to inform and educate. This means that they put work and time into the text and makes sure to give out true facts and therefore it can be trustworthy. They proof this by adding pictures of statics and graphs to show the evidence from this time period.<br>The author, Daniel F. Belknap, is according to my research an old student at an education about Marine science at a University. This means he is educated in the subject and knows what he is writing. He has been tested at the education and therefore is qualified to be writing truthful information. His text is also written in an objective perspective which also shows that his article's reliability is high. <br>The article doesn't contain a publish date which means that it could have been now or many years ago and therefore we can't tell if the time difference have affected the facts. Though, I still believe this text is trustworthy because it is similar to other sources and match with the information I already knew. <br>As a summary I would say that the information given in this website is relevant for this assignment and useful for my research though the website itself is a bit too complicated and not relevant for my age. This is where I found information about the climate, ice age, thaw, animals and the humans. <br>I liked this article because it was easier to read and was more suited for my age compared to the other sources. It is well structured and short enough to read it all and get enough information to understand. <br>It is written and published by the company - National Geographic. They have may other articles about evolution, history, discoveries and science. This means that it is a website made for sharing information, educating. Which means, as I've mention before, that it has a higher reliability because of its purpose. <br>It has a few advertisements, but not in a bad and "cheap" way. <br>They doesn't mention a specific author which either means it was multiple authors or that the author wants to be anonymous. This means that we can't research who made it and if he/she have the qualifications of writing truthful texts but because of the company and its qualifications and purposes I believe it doesn't affect the text's reliability. The same thing with the published date. As I said in the recent source, the facts take place millions of years ago and the possibility that a few years since the published date will affect or change that information is very small. <br>However, the article was very useful to me and it increased my understanding of the whole time period. It matched the information given in the other two sources which also increased my understanding of those, meaning it is very relevant. It is written very objective and professional and as a summary I would certainly admit that this website is trustworthy and useful as a source of research. </div>]]></description>

         <title>The great ice age</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The great ice age occurred 22, 000ya where 30 percent of the Earth's surface was covered in glaciers, mostly on Antarctica. The ice age occurred because earth wobbled on it's path around the sun and made the temperature decrease. The ice sheets were many kilometres thick and spread over time over North America and Europe. It caused climate change and changes in the sea levels. The water turned into ice so the sea levels decreased which caused land bridges of the ocean floor so animals could transport between the continents. This also resulted in rapid changes in both flora and fauna. The change in food resources and environment caused extinction of the largest herbivores and their predators, for example mammals. <br>When the temperature later increased the sea levels rose rapidly and the landmasses evolved into how the continents are arranged  today. The thawing caused reshaped mountains and new rivers draining to basins. Each shift changes global winds and ocean currents that affects the patterns of the precipitation and aridity around the world. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After the big thaw the plants and animals that require warmth and comfort at the Equator starts to return to these areas after they emigrated south because of the ice age. Since the beginning of the Quaternary time period whales and sharks ruled the seas by being the top of the food chain. On land, the lagest mammals dominated, for example mammoths and rhinos. These species fed on small shrubs and grasses from the edges of the melting ice sheet. When the climate began to warm the megafaunas died out and went extinct. Only some smaller mammals like Africa's elephant, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses survived and are still living today. <br>Scientists aren't certain of the reason why these species died out, it could be because of the drastic climate change or the fact that the modern human specie were spread rapidly and might have hunted these animals causing them to extinct. </div>]]></description>

         <title>The modern human</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Homo Erectus is a specie of an archaic human that appeared in Africa during the beginning of this time period. The Homo Erectus has its origin from a group of mammals, the monkeys, and they both belong to a group called Primates. As the human evolved on the hominid line, development of the human specie, it evolved bigger brain and higher intelligence. The first modern human occurred in Africa 190,000 years ago and spread over time to Europe and Asia, later on to Australia and America. The human became the new predator in the food chain and ruled the world because of managing to use fire and create weapons. Over time, the specie has changed and rearranged the composition of life in the sea, land, and air, and are now suspected by scientist to cause our own planet to warm. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Quaternary time period is the best-studied part of the geologic record. This means that scientists has found the most detailed evidence and most information from this specific period. This is because the rocks and sediments from the Quaternary period can be found on or near earth's surface. The evidence is important because it can be compared to modern sediments and research has discovered that they are very similar to today. The fossils of that time are related to living organism that are more similar to today and therefore are scientists able to, with help of special techniques, produce more precise timing and measurements of events, developments and changes during that time. This in its turn allows me to write this kind of assignment. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Atmosphere</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I did not manage to find any source specifically regarding the atmosphere during this period. However, by researching and writing about other information and learning that the evolution of the climate results in our precent stage I made a conclusion of how I assume the atmosphere was.<br>I assume that the atmosphere was very similar to ours today, although, with less carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. During the Quaternary period there was, as I've mentioned, the evolution of the human, ice age and much more. This means there was no emission of gases except for maybe coal from fire and chemicals from plants. Today we cause emissions from cars, factories, transport, and much more that causes these greenhouse gases to form a layer in the atmosphere which later on heats up earth and forms our current issue, global warming. Though, after the great ice age the earth's heat increased and species were obliterated, not because of greenhouse gases. Maybe the earth wobbled back on its path compared to the sun, no one is certain, but we do know that our emission of gases causes the earth to heat and if we don't change our life style soon we'll all experience extinction in one or another way. </div>]]></description>
