I would tend to think that this could still occur as I have previously smoked and have asthma. Since those in my family have Type 2 diabetes, I stay aware and have regular checks to make sure I avoid this risk. My uncle has controlled his by diet and my Grandmother prevents hers with her diet. Overall my family tends to be very healthy with most members from both side reaching up into the late 80's and 90's with some that have made it to 100 before passing away. While most of my family tends to be healthy there are a few things to worry about. First there is a high prevalence of heart diseases and heart attacks, mostly with male relatives and there is a high prevalence of Alzheimer, coming from both maternal and paternal sides. 

Knowing the risk of Cardiovascular diseases in my family has led me to be more aware of staying healthy to help prevent myself from being diagnosed with heart disease.
